PETA Kills Adoptable Animals!
So little old sheltered me just found out that PETA kills adoptable animals after watching the video: Your Mommy Kills Animals (they talk about PETA around 1 hour into it)
I guess I am seeing why so many vegans are so against PETA for reasons other than their crazy tactics... I am really bummed and saddened that I actually made a donation to them... Why does PETA feel they have the right to decide whether animals live or die (since they feel death is better than being in a shelter)?

I think you may be over simplifying the matter. PETA has addressed the issue:

Their case is that these animals are not going to get the love and individual attention they need to thrive and have a happy life. No kill shelters tend to turn away animals and breeds (I have had numerous experiences with this phenomenon) that are not on their approved lists or that they do not feel are adoptable.
Couple that with the fact that many of the animals that PETA itself rescues are from labs or from very poorly run shelters. Finding homes for these animals who would require so much more attention is no easy task.
It's not like people are giving PETA healthy kittens and they are in the back room stomping them.
PETA has adopted controlling the pet poulation as part of their message. They encourage people to have their pets spayed or neutered to avoid overpopulation and the euthanasia that follows with animal overpopulation.
Is it more humane to leave these animals locked up in cages for years, never to be adopted? What about quality of life? These are the real questions here, and the real issue is how to properly deal with so many unwanted and/or abused animals.
The links you've provided have decided life is life no matter what. Fine, that's their take. But there are other valid arguements in this complex issue, and I feel that PETAs stance and arguement is a valid one.

Well, if you subscribe to veganism in an attempt to reduce animal suffering, it seems to keep in line. It seem far more cruel to me to keep an animal locked up and isolated alive for years, than to give the animal some good quality time, and then send it off - peacefully and painlessly - back to the universe.
If pet euthanasia was the only part of their platform, I'd have a problem too. However they do preach animal population control and are trying to make people aware of the cruel practices that happen everywhere. (Agreeing with their tactics is another agruement...) I see it as consistent.
Side note: Y'know, I never knew I liked PETA so much until I found myself defending them so much in this very forum. Odd.
I do agree with a lot of what PETA does but that part saddens me... i guess everyone has their own opinion on the matter, i just don't agree with it... i wish buying dogs was illegal until this problem got under control... it disgusts me that people still feel the need to buy dogs when there are so many perfect dogs in shelters... cats on the other hand, do people really still buy those? or is the problem just idiots not fixing their animals?
Well, it's a big part of it. Other parts of it are abndoned animals who are not fixed thus breeding wildly, irresponsible owners allowing unfixed animals out and about and also the fact that pet breeding is big business.
It's a big issue, and complicated. I wish there were some easy cure all.
I'm not a very big fan of PETA to begin with.

As for PETA, well, here in Europe they don't seem to do much except put up posters and take donations. Not a fan.
I tend to try and keep my distance from PETA simply because I find their advertising tends towards the distasteful, but also because I'm not sure I agree with Newkirk's philosophy that pets should be eliminated as a part of human cultures. I appreciate putting down 'mad dogs' may be the best option available, but I can't reconcile that with my opposition to the death penalty. Is it okay to euthanize humans who are severely mentally ill, to the point of being 'dangerous' or 'unmanageable'? I don't have an answer, so I don't feel comfortable taking a side.

I think so, and obviously AIS does. Try it sometime. There's a recipe or two here on VW. My version is called "Pittsburgh Revisited." I'm not from PA, which is why the "revisited."
