Christian vegans

I realize that this has nothing to do with recipes but most forums here dont anyways so i would like to start a forum on christian thoughts. Please remember that all of us here like for our beliefs of vegism to be respected so keep it respectfull.

I would first like to say that i am very mad that when i typed christian vegans into my search bar the first page it brought up was a wanna be preacher who is so lost in the bible that he calls vegans witches.

Much of what "Christians" do seems cruel to me.  Growing up in NC there were a lot of Baptists and Pentecostals that didn't dance, so it doesn't seem odd to me at all.  B

I'm atheist.  But I have religion envy.  I don't know what that means.

I know what you mean.  I'm a Humanist, but was a church going Christian for a long time.  I miss the spirituality sometimes.  I go to UU regularly now, and it's not quite the same.

lbarte- i have a question. i was watching 18 kids and counting and they, like you, don't watch tv, wear skirts (well, the girls. lol) don't cut their hair, etc. one thing that i was confused about was that they don't dance. i was really confused, and am still wondering why they don't dance. i don't know if you practice that too, but it seems like you'd know more than i do. lol. do you know why they don't dance?

I don't know their particular religious views, but I grew up Southern Baptist.  In which you didn't drink, women wore skirts, and no dancing were the rules.  Sounds like they to maybe SBC.  If memory serves me right, It's because they think dancing could lead to other things involving a more horizontal position and that most of todays dance moves are WAY to suggestive in nature.

No dancing just seems so foreign to me. I grew up in a Christian home (full gospel, non-denominational) but I was in California where things just aren't as conservative, but am not a Christian myself. Anyway, I can't imagine not being able to dance. Music is wonderful, and dancing is a great form of expression, great exercise and so much fun. To be denied just seems cruel :(

i agree!! dancing doesnt have to be sexual or whatever they see it as. it's just a way to express how you're feeling annnddd it's a beautiful art to watch

I am so happy to see that there are Christian Vegans/Vegetarians really out there!  Where I live it is unheard of.  Actually vegans are unheard of pretty much.  Most people who ask me why I don't eat certain things, and I tell them I'm a vegan, they have no idea what that is.  When I explain it to them, all I get is rude comments, or questions.  I would love to talk to a like-minded person if there's someone else out there looking for someone to talk to who understands them lol.  Thanks for brightening my day everyone! =)

Hi peacekeeper!  Another Christian here!  I would love to keep in touch.  I understand how it is living as a vegan AND Christian and feeling like you must be the only one on the planet.  Rest assured you are not alone.  There is also a Christian vegetarian forum that rocks on Christian Vegetarian Association's website.  Many on that list are vegans.

Even among some vegan groups I have felt shunned and disrespected for my beliefs, such as being prolife in ALL areas.  I have also dealt with the apathy towards nonhuman animals from a lot of Christians who believe only humans have value on this Earth.  Sometimes I feel very much alone out there trying to figure it all out, to live a life with values that so few share.  I stand by my beliefs and convictions, but I am still human and still have a need for acceptance from others.

I see that you are from Ohio?  I lived there for my first 21 years before moving to Minnesota.  I live way up north now where hunting and fishing is a way of life.  Sighs...but I love the beauty of the northwoods here.  I grew up in Columbus.  I dont miss the big city too much but do appreciate that at least in a bigger city vegan options are better.  I have to order everything online now a days to find what I need.  Anyway, glad to see this thread revived!

I didn't know you're Taoist.  I received the Tao a couple of years ago and went to some meetings, but they said I had to believe in god, so I quit going.

And this contributes to the discussion...how? A flat denial isn't  much in the way of input.

Maybe not for you.

I live in an area that is, according to statistics, 97.8% Christian.  While I am not Christian , I respect their choices and beliefs.  I just wish they returned the favor.

Sadly, many Christians seem to be very naive and ignorant of anyone else's beliefs. I have come across a few here that are incredibly open, awesome, and accepting but have also seen the darker side of Christianity firsthand. I respect Christians and their beliefs, but a lot of the time someone will look at me as though I've got my dick out and am waving it at their child when I tell them I don't believe in God. Because apparently this means I am not only a monster, but a thief and a pedophile, with a soul made of rotting durian.

(from an atheist's perspective)

All religions are pretty much the same - they're rules for people living successfully in a group together.  Not murdering obnoxious coworkers or continually hitting on a neighbor's spouse makes for a smoother operating society.  It sounds more convincing if a supernatural being made up the rule instead of Joe, so creations myths and fluff were spun around the basic tenants to make the rules seem more authoritative.

Religion is fine, but the specificity of the fluff goes astray.  For example, God being displeased with a woman who braids her hair is like a CEO who is displeased because an hourly employee got a manicure.  It's unbelievable that an omni-present super-being would care, rather than it being a crabby man pissed at his wife who braided her hair instead of making him a chicken pot pie.

Anyway - Christianity doesn't cover much, such as veganism or the importance of education - that's not its purpose (which is to organize social rules).

Although some fluffy specificity is awesome:
Yet she increased her prostitution, remembering the days of her youth when she engaged in prostitution in the land of Egypt. She lusted after their genitals as large as those of donkeys, and their seminal emission was as strong as that of stallions. (Ezekiel 23:19-20)

Ahh, yes: the grand times of carefree youth... thanks HH: that takes me back!  ;)

'I care nothing for any's religion, whose dog is not the better for it.'-- Abe Lincoln
The reverse is also true: if it helps you be a kind person, knock yourself out, and I've got no problem with anything you wanna believe, if that is the end result... HOWEVER: i've not yet met a monotheistic father-god conversion-based religion that could resist being an asshole to everyone else, at an institutional level... I've known a sweet few individuals who are deeply thoughtful and kind despite buying into the belief structure under discussion, sure-- but, imo, it IS 'in spite of' it, since you automatically have to discount like 2/3 of the theological dogma in question, in order to be kind to folks who disagree with those specific dogmatic ideals (vs selective kindness to one particular homogenous group of like-minded believers)... historically the Quakers are consistently, as a group, pretty cool; Buddhists, Taoists, same; other organized religions seem to do more harm than good, to me... but hey: kindness wins-- whatever imagery gets that job done, that's cool. Just, you know, don't splash it onto those who didn't order it; that's all i ask.

i like your thoughts here... like vegans, there are many crazy "christians" who shove their beliefs down others throats... i, as a christian, am not perfect... shit, i'm a hypocrite and everyone is... i am not here to judge or discount your opinions but being christian works for me and makes me extremely fulfilled and happy... so let me be me and i'll let you be you... but be respectful of my opinion, that's all... for me, i know God is there/ here... i feel his presence, i know he exists... do i have proof? no... it's just a leap of faith i am willing to take :)

so LL stop being an ass and trying to get people pissed... i know your tactics homeslice and they don't work on me, so suck it ;)

i just wish we would "fight" sometimes in "food fight".
plus i just got done reading christopher hitchens' "hitch 22" and i'm just testing out my new found brilliance.
also... watched this debate the other day.
it's over an hour long... but if you have the time...

this is a debate with hitchens against four apologists at a christian book fair.
they look silly compared to him.
