Vegan hot dogs

I tried Smart Dogs this weekend - and I thought they were terrrrrible!! :'( Are Tofu Pups any better? Or are there any other ones that might be edible? One of the few things I actually miss are hot dogs on the grill in the summer (and even when I used to eat meat, I'd only eat like 1 or 2 a summer, but still...)
Is there any hope for me, or am I resigned to a life of drooling like an idiot at the sight of a grilled Hebrew National :'(
good question...
i too tried those horrendous smart dogs and i agree..they were awful. i am eagerly awaiting someones comment on tofu pups however, tofurkey tastes really good on the grill. try the tofurkey kielbasa or the tofurkey italian sausage. they are both very yummy!!

IMO - There are NO non-terrible hotdogs. Back when I ate analogs I tried them all. If you're set on eating them, I recommend putting them in a bun with lots of condiments and relish, so you get the atmosphere without tasting the dog.

These were so bad I might just eat a BUN with all the condiments *LOL*

I'll have to look for those next time I'm at Whole Foods - thanks for the suggestion!
The tofurkey sausages are pretty good...but then again, maybe anything will taste better roasted on a stick over a camp fire :)
I actually like the Smartdogs. I follow the directions and do the boil water, turn off heat, let dog sit for 2 minutes in the water. They are NOT good on the grill. Also, it really helps to have a bun and lots of mustard or other condiments. I don't think any type of hotdog (even meat) is meant to eat plain.
You might try pretty in punks recipe on this site for "Pigs are Safe in the Barn". I took them to a family reunion and everyone liked them (omnivores too!). My family begs for them all the time!

Unfortunately, that's how I made them - by boiling them. The weird thing is, I also didn't find them hot enough after 2 minutes. Maybe I'd like them better if they were hotter. I still have a few left that I have to eat eventually...I stuck them in the freezer. Maybe freezing them will give them better texture? That was my major complaint with them...the texture was yucky to me.
I like Yves Veggie Dogs.
Hmm, that's weird, I love Smart Dogs! They seem to have the best taste of any of the hot dog analogues to me. They are certainly softer than regular hot dogs, but if you eat them with a nice toasted bun, ketchup, mustard, and do the package directions right I think they are scrumptious and have a pretty good texture. Also, they get cold fast, so eat them quick or they will taste kinda weird. They should be -very- hot when you take them out of the water, so maybe something went wrong there. But, everybody's different, maybe they just aren't your thing :) I also love Tofurky sausages too but usually I don't eat them whole, maybe I'll try that sometime.
I used to eat Yves Veggie Dogs a lot back in college. I just nuked them. Great texture and flavor! I thought they were nice and chewy, but not rubbery. Then again, I was raised vegetarian and never had the real ones as a kid. ;)
I will definitely look for the Yves brand, as well as the Tofurky dogs. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! :)
I don't like analogues in general, but when I worked at the health food store, the freezer unit broke, and since the food was distressed and couldn't be sold, the boss let me take home a few items. One was "Soy Boy Not Dogs."
I took them to my omni mom's and made them according to package directions. She took one bite and said "oooh, these are gross- nothing like the real thing!" At the same time, I took one bite and said "oooh, these are gross- just like the real thing!" ;D
I can handle the smart dog if I follow the directions and load it up with lots of condiments or veggie chili or something.
I'm looking forward to trying Yve's Brats when I go back to the states. My grandma liked them so much she sent me the label!
I had a huge hot dog/brat craving a few weeks ago and when it wouldn't go away I grabbed some boca italian sausages (warning they have egg whites!) it was the ONLY thing avalible.... i thought they were great flavor and texture and perfect for the one time thing but not something i can normally buy due to the egg whites. :P
Another vote for Yves tofu dogs.
what??? I love smart dogs! But then again I also drench them with tons of toppings so its not like im just eating the dog or anything...
Just wanted to say - I just tried a grilled Yves' vegan veggie dog for lunch and OMG it is SOOOOOO much better than the Smart Dogs!!! Yay!!! It definitely helped too that they were piping hot and loaded with the good condiments (ketchup, mustard, and relish) on a delish Rudi's Organics whole wheat bun. Yummers!!!
I just had an Yves veggie dog. I tried Smart Dogs, but found them less flavorful.
I like Yves (Tofu Dog, I think-maybe Veggie Dog)-anyhow, grilling is best. I had some Tofurky Beer Brats Friday and they were very good on grill.
The other night I made the morningstar farms dogs in the toaster oven.. I had made the smartdogs before and HATED them..texturally they were just gross. The morningstar farms ones weren't too bad, they had a nice texture and a decent taste to them. My husband drowns them in baked beans ;D
