Szechuan sauce substitute?

I want to make a recipe from Vegetarian Times called Szechuan Black-Eyed Pea Salad - the salad calls for 1 tbs of szechuan sauce. However, I don't have any sauce and don't want to buy a bottle since I probably won't use any of the rest of it. I know it's dumb to make a recipe called Szechuan salad and not use szechuan sauce, but does anyone know of a good substitute? I have tamari, rice wine vinegar, mirin, hoisin sauce, and other condiments. Any advice? Thanks in advance...

Maybe just mix up some hoisin with extra tamari and vinegar, and add tons of red chili flakes or sriracha (depending which kind of spiciness you want).
