Stevia?

Has anyone ever used Stevia either in baking, cooking, or just in your morning coffee?? I would really like to sub some of the sugar in baked goods with Stevia.

I'm also  curious whether it has a laxative effect, or causes gas like artificial sweeteners?

Thanks!!

I use this brand all the time...I use it in all beverages that need sweetening and also in dressings or sauces that call for sweeteners...I have used it to substitute part of the sweetener in baking but never used it exclusively.

I have never noticed a laxative effect but it does have lots of fiber.

It is super sweet and too much can taste bitter so start with small amounts.  Most health food stores (at least around here) offer it as a sweetener if you buy a cup of coffee or tea...maybe try it out that way and see if you like it.

I use stevia in tea a lot, it is wonderfully sweet but has an interesting after taste. You either hate it or you don't.  :D

A dear VWer sent me some SweetLeaf stevia-in-a-jar. At first I found it bitter, not at all sweet, but after the container had been open for a day or two it was sweet...still has that funny aftertaste, though not as bad as saccharine.

I must have had a bad batch as it gave me the jitters, was bitter, and an aftertaste i had to chase with cranberry juice.

i l o v e stevia! i use it in beverages and in cereals and oatmeal. i use "now" brand, its pretty inexpensive at 6$ for 100 packets (others are the same price for 1/2 the amt of packets)

i have never experimented with it for baking because of the volume difference
