My mother and I are in a heated discussion about my food pantry. Be honest...is there something wrong with this?
She says 'hippie' like it's a bad thing.

Is she a conservative? She should appreciate your fiscal responsibility in that you buy in bulk and reuse containers instead of buy new. Assure her that if it was indeed hippie, those would be glass jars instead of plastic.

My wife and I differ in our views too. I always try to reuse my containers and my wife is always tossing them into the recycle bin. I have quite a few kombucha bottle (I drink it every day. . . sometimes twice). Those are great bottles. Heavy glass, wide neck, and just the right size (16oz).

I wish my family would let me do this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

How odd it is that my 70 year old mother can visit me, criticize my eating, my kitchen, my food prep and it still makes me feel bad.
Oh...and she did make a comment about them being Gatorade bottles and not glass! Took me forever to train daughter's friends to keep them. Now they bring them to my house when they come over.
I'm always on the lookout for good used containers. Gatorade bottles just happen to fit perfectly on those shelves with no wasted space, and they're the perfect size for grabbing and shaking out. I showed her your posts and she thinks all vegetarians are weird.
I love you too Mom.

My mom stores all of her stuff in pickle jars. She gets 1 gal. ones from work for sugar, flour etc., and uses small ones for other things. It's not weird, it's smart. Tupperware costs a fortune.

Bovina, of Course your 70 yr old mom can still make you feel bad. She knows just which buttons to push. She's known you longer than anyone else on earth.
But this looks just like any Spanish woman's pantry, particularly those of 70 or older. My MIL was the one who taught me to re use glass jars with good lids, because of bugs. And you can see what's in them instead of labelling. And no plastic smell, which you get with new plastic containers. Rice that smells like plastic is not nice.
Don't worry about "hippie"--some people say "bitch" like it's a bad thing, too. :-D

My pantry looks about the same I guess. I prefer to think of it as cheap instead of hippie. Who wants to spend money on containers when you throw good ones away. That is silly. What amazes me is going into the kitchens of "normal people" and seeing little actual food in there. Usually all they have is processed junk but no actual ingredients to make anything with. I guess I'd rather be called a hippie than cheap, fast, and easy.

ha, I sat and stared at the picture for a few mins trying to figure out what was wrong with this....I thought it was a trick or something, then I readd everyone elses posts and realised that the whole 'what was wrong with this' question was about the bottles being used as storage (that is the 'what is wrong with this', isn't it)
So I guess my obvious answer to this is no way - I didn't even get what you were trying to get across to begin with!!

My kids call me a hippie all the time too (although I'm only 42 which makes me too young to have been an actual hippie). I take it as a compliment. I always liked what hippies stood for (minus the drugs).

I love thick glass jars! We don't recycle any of these. I think it's 100% normal!

I'd love to get more glass jars but the big ones are hard for me to find and I'm afraid of breakage. I lived at the epicenter of the '94 earthquake in So Cal and it scarred me for life, physically and emotionally. I is afeared of putting anything glass up high. Even though I have baby latches on the cupboards to keep the stuff from flying out again.
I refuse to buy Tupperware or Rubbermaid. I've found that food tastes better eaten from glass or ceramic. I eat my weekday lunches out of Pyrex bowls I've found at thrift stores. One of my favorite finds.
I would love to see other people's food storage. Take some pics and post em!

Me too, I love them...and my brother saves me his Kimchi jars which look like this pickle jar. I love the wide openings you can stick your whole hand into.

I also like to reuse spice jars for when I have to buy spices in packets:

I can't wait to show my mom. :P
