I know this is very wierd, but I have found myself really craving shrimp lately! I highly doubt there are any alternatives out there, but just wondering if anyone knew of any...? Maybe I'm just not getting enough protein lately or something. I've been vegetarian for 4 years now (no lapses), and the thought of eating real shrimp kinda makes me feel sick, so I don't understand why I still crave it.
Hi. I'm from Mexico, and in Guadalajara there is a restaurant that serves "shimps". I love them! They are great and they prepare a dip with vegan mayo and chopped cucumber that is just amazing! So, I asked them for the recipe and they said NO! Anyway, I experimented until I got something similar that is just tasty and, if you serve it with the dip and a fresh lettuce salad, you reallly get something shrimp.like. Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
4 medium carrots, shreded
1 cup flour
1 cup water
Egg replacer for 1 egg
Garlic salt (I use about 1/2 a teaspoon, but that's 'cause I love garlic!)
1/2 teaspoon Papprika
Yeast, just a pinch
Pepper to tatse
Frying oil
Procedure:
Mix all the inmgredients, except the carrots, until you get a thick sauce with no lumps. While you do this, heat the oil in a frying pan. Add the carrots to the mixture and coat evenly. Take a spoonful of the mixture and put it in the hot oil, you can use the spoon to shape the mixture kind of like a shrimp ::). Make sure the "shrimps" are crispy, carrots have a lot of humidity and this may make them a bit chewy. If you serve them immediatelly over a bed of lettuce, you'll get a great meal ;)b
The flavor comes from the spices, you can add any other that may work, such as, kelp, onion (powder), celery (powder) etc.
I hope you enjoy this recipe, let me know if you liked it, please.
