Rice Knishes?
Okay, I have a confession. I have never made knishes. I've never even reheated pre-made, frozen knishes. It's not my thing. This is horrendous in my boyfriend's family, where nobody's actually (religiously) Jewish, but they still have those little traditions that they pass down unreligiously (like how my parents have a Christmas tree but don't believe in god).
My boyfriend has repeatedly talked about this great Philidelphia Jewish bakery where he would go and get *rice knishes* when he visited his grandmother there, and how nowhere else had them, and he doesn't go there now because she has passed away.
does *anyone* have a recipe for Rice Knishes? I've looked everywhere, searched indices of Jewish Cookbooks in bookstores, frequent internet searches.... anybody have any idea? Because I've never even made a knish before, I don't feel comfortable just experimenting with using rice fillings. Any help?
Well...knisher are usually made of a mashed-potato mixture. Maybe his special ones use rice instead of mashed potato...but you'd have to have some kind of a binding agent to get them to hold together. (Or purposely make some really, really sticky rice). How brave do you feel? Could you start with a potato recipe and play with it?
I am... moderately brave. Of course, I'm a college student and don't have a ton of money to buy ingredients for recipes that really don't work out. I'll end up diving in at some point, though.
I say first you have to ask him to describe it more accurately.
Was there rice added to the mashed potato filling?
Or the dough was made out of rice flour?
Then you'll probably find it I think.
I never heard of it.

"So tell me, punk...how brave do ya feel? C'mon...make my knish."
(Sorry, I had chocolate cake for breakfast and I think I'm on a sugar high. If you don't know about Dirty Harry you're adrift.)
startaurus: The conversation went like this: "Was the rice mixed with potato?" "I don't know, I didn't make it." "Well did it taste like it?" "I dunno, what would that taste like?" "Was it sticky-mushy or dry-crumbley?" "um, inbetween" "were there spices?" "I don't think so." "Was there onion?" "I don't know." --- not very helpful. Now my general idea of it is like... sticky rice in dough, with absolutely no flavoring. Sounds horrifically bland to me. Then again, he's the kind of person who eats something so fast he can only tell if it's good or bad--not really how it tastes.
Yabbitgirl: While I didn't(/don't) know about Dirty Harry, I've heard that references before. :D
Google Russian rice knish recipes. Some are coming up as recipes I looked at one but it's not vegan .
Then google Polish rice knish recipes. I didn't see no recipes off hand just like information on it and who sells it.
