Question about nut substitutes

Hello I am not commenting on, posting, nor am I submitting a recipe at this time. I just have a question and hope that someone can answer it for me. My son and I are vegans and I would like to make a basil or other pesto, but all of the recipes call for walnuts, or nuts or even pine nuts. My problem is that my son is allergic to nuts. Is there anything that I could use as a substitute for nuts in recipes?
Thank you
Gizella
Gizella, I often leave them out of pesto without a substitute just because I don't have them on hand.
If you find that your recipe seems to be lacking something if you simply skip the nuts, and you're looking for something to provide richness and similar flavor, perhaps a bit of roasted winter squash or chestnut (provided that the latter isn't something he's allergic to, of course) would do the trick... hmm, I'm sure other commenters will have more creative suggestions soon!
Hey,
My hubby is also deathly allergic to tree nuts... we don't feed our 2 1/2 year olds tree nuts or peanuts, just incase they "inherited" the allergy.
I substitute sunflower seeds if a recipe calls for nuts.

Smarty. Are they different, allergenically? I had no idea!
I live on sunflower seeds. Can't function without them.
