They're not vegan right? because powdered sugar is basically sugar except more refined and brown sugar is just refined sugar with added molasses
what are some brands of vegan powdered sugar or brown sugar?
So your answer is no?? =\
basically, you have to check with the manufacturers. if your powdered sugar comes from beets it should be ok... depends.
and brown sugar is sooo easy to make yourself you can just mix beet sugar and molasses.
Hain Organic is also vegan. I buy their powdered sugar. They also make Soy/Rice Dream and a bunch of other veg-friendly things.
I think you can also make your own powdered sugar by taking regular sugar (i.e. non-bone char processed) and corn starch and running them through the food processor? Never tried it though...sounds messy, but do-able.
Welcome to the board!
From what I understand, if the sugar is listed as organic, it's (almost always) vegan. Because it doesn't go through the refining process.
You can always use a sugar that you know is vegan and make your own brown sugar or powdered sugar.
Brown Sugar = 1 cup sugar + 2-4 T molasses
Powdered = 1 cup sugar (+ 2T cornstarch or arrowroot, if desired) run in a high speed blender until fine and powdery
I find that 1 cup of sugar and 1 T. molasses makes a fairly rich brown sugar. You might want to start with that and add more if you want it richer/darker.
I've experimented with this and it can be a lot of fun. It creates a cool cloud of sugar dust when you lift the lid of the food processor. Corn starch must be the important ingredient as my cookies never turn out properly.
Jennifer! Thanks for posting the required amount of corn starch! I'll tried this next time I bake.
What cookie recipe do you use that calls for powdered sugar?? Is it shortbread? Mmm! :)
Corn Starch is needed if you're using the powdered sugar to make icing, it helps make it stiff and thicker and it keeps the sugar from clumping if you're storing it but otherwise (for baking INTO things) I don't really think you need it.
I just wanted to also add:
Powdered Sugar=Confectioner's Sugar=Icing Sugar=Royal Icing Sugar
