Need a second opinion: Would you put apple in tomato soup?

I bought a Granny Smith apple in a fit of abstraction. Well, I bought 2, and the one I ate didn't taste like much. So today I want to make tomato-veggie soup and I was wondering what would happen if I cut it up small and threw it in. Would it work or be ugh?

Any ideas?

No . I would never.

I would, I like the added crunch, but it probably wouldn't freeze well

Do it! And report back on how it works out. I bet this is how those crazy delicious recipes that seemed off the wall at the time and eventually become household favorites are born into existence. It can't be that bad.

Well I quartered and cored it and threw it in, chopped up, with carrots and tomatoes (lots of those) and celery and onion and leek and a turnip (small) and a parsnip (large) and it made a huge amount. I will blitz it today (cuz I finished cooking at like 10.30 PM last night and went straight off to bed) and leave you know.

I zapped the soup with my immersion blender this AM and while it could have stood watering down, the resulting thick puree was very filling and satisfying when warmed in the microwave. The apple balanced the tomato and parsnip and turnip very nicely. It could be varied with herbs and spices but I made it with just the fruits and veggies and whatever seasoning was in the commercial broth. Even without watering it down I had a good half-gallon of soup. I think one apple was plenty for the proportion of tomatoes and other veggies I used.

Keeper.

Now if I can just remember what I used enough to write it down...

ETA: I did, and have submitted the resulting recipe to VW.

Glad it worked out, yabbit. I added the recipe to my recipe box to try as soon as I can get my hands on that many fresh veggies. It looks really delicious, and I love to try new combinations of flavors. :)

It's easier for me...I get the "soup box" from LIDL which contains mostly carrots, a turnip, a parsnip,  leek, and an odd veggie that could be some kind of turnip thing but is all white and shaped like a shmoo. I sliced some off and tasted it and it tasted kinda radishy. I'm still not sure what it is, so I don't usually use it. There's usually a stick of celery in there too, if you're lucky. I think they throw it in as a makeweight, though.

And here, I tend to buy tomatoes 4 lbs at a time. So when you get a batch that's too ripe, you have to make soup or sauce pronto.

Aaah. I would LOVE to join a CSA, but unfortunately there are slim pickings around here (the nearest one would have me driving 40 miles once a week) and they're all priced quite a bit over what my student budget could cover. Alas, I'm hoping that if the eating-local-is-cool mainfesto continues to entrance consumers more CSAs will pop up and it might become more feasible for me. Every once in a while there are some great sales at the local farmers market though, and I do have a pick-your-own farm not too far down the street that turns out some great crop in the Spring.

Your experimentation with flavor combos is inspring! There are a few of your soup recipes I've had on my to-make list for a while. I need to get ibusy n the kitchen. :P
