Making Green Tea Powder

Okay, so I was at Teavana the other day, the place where I usually buy green tea powder for drinks, ice cream, etc. It's usually around $20 for 30 grams of the stuff, smaller than a handful. So, fed up with the high price to volume ratio (though I know there's good reason for it, as it's hand picked and all exquisite and whatever) I had the pondering of whether it is possible to make your own green tea powder. They said it's make from gyokuro leaves, and they sell it in the same shop for a lot cheaper. Does anyone know if there's a certain way that it's ground? I was thinking if it would be possible just to grind it up in a food processor, he he.
i tried grinding up loose green tea my mom had with a mortar and pestle (it felt pretty home meth lab-y :p ) and used that in green tea cupcakes. there were a few big pieces still, but i bet if you used like a coffee grinder or something there wouldnt be that problem. i also got some green tea powder for the cakes and made them that way. they tasted pretty much the same..i guess try it?
Yeah, I was gonna say coffee grinder or spice grinder. Food processor might leave some pieces, but still might work. Like, I am envisioning, grind it up in the processor, pass it through a wire mesh strainer, then process the remaining bigger pieces some more. Repeat til you pretty much ground the whole thing to powder. Maybe? I think that might work.
Wow this is such a great idea!
I use a lot of green tea powder too but I never thought of making my own.
We will put the corporate green-tea powder octopus out of business to be sure!
oooohh, thanks for the ideas guys, I will definitely try this out this weekend! I have a large surplus of green tea, so there's definitely room to experiment.
I need to buy a new coffee grinder and reserve it for grinding other things. Like tea, and spices, but I also make my own rice "flour" by grinding it in a coffee grinder. Zip, zip, you're done. And no big cleanup.
I tried to grind it using a coffee grinder but still not as fine as Matcha green tea. I saw it at Trader Joe's and it was not so expensive.

The Matcha powder sold at Trader Joe's has sweetener and whey added to it, if I am not mistaken. I used to buy that before I cut out milk. If you're saying they have a new pure matcha powder, then hot damN! i gotsa get over there.
I never buy matcha powder at Trader Joe's but I only saw it at the shelf. If it contain whey and sugar, it is too bad. I had pure matcha from Taiwan whenever my friends went back I would ask them to take it back for me because I could not make it fine enough! This make me thinking, if there are Asian or Japanese stores near you, they may carry it. Where I live don't have one which is the reason I rely on my friends. The Japanese or Chinese word will looks like this : 抹茶
doughbunny- awesome! thanks for the info. I can't seem to find any asian food stores around me, only a few persian ones. Ah well.
On another note-
I tried grinding the tea in a baby coffee grinder I have, AND IT WORKED MIRACULOUSLY!! I got it veerry fine, but the only thing is that it's considerably darker than the bright green matcha powder I'm used to. I wonder why? Maybe it's ground when the leaves are younger?
