Hot Dog Substitute

Hi.
I'm new here, so I hope this is the right place for this.
I'm planning a labor day cookout and I'd like a hot dog analog, but I'd really like something I can make from scratch. It seems like all the dogs I've seen are processed as processed can be and I'd like something a little more wholesome.
Any suggestions?
How about something like this: vegan bratwurst - I haven't tried it myself, but it sounds delicious. A brat would be a bit spicier than a hot dog, so if you don't like that maybe you can change up the seasonings?
I haven't tried the bratwurst on Vegan Dad's site, but I have tried the Italian sausage and they are fab! If you are going to be grilling them, I would suggest maybe brushing them with oil because they are fat free.
I'm a fan of the hot dogs from 500 vegan recipes...they're pretty tasty. I generally make mine smaller than what the recipe calls for, though. http://justthefood.blogspot.com/2010/03/beer-battered-corndogs-and-baked-sweet.html
i really like cedar lake hot dogs. but those are probly super processed.
Those are all really helpful. Thank you.
Do you think the 500 vegan recipes dogs would work on a grill?
I would say so, I haven't tried it that way yet though. I don't see why not just for some grill marks after baking.
I just slice portobello caps into hot-dog shaped strips and grill them. They get crispy on the outside and squishy-firm on the inside and have a texture/mouth-feel remarkably like a hot dog. When the toppings are piled on you don't really notice any difference. It's super easy and totally not processed.
I can't cut and paste links for some reason with this browser, but try the Savoury Sausages from here on VW.
I will try tomorrow when I'm on the other computer. They are delicious and if you chill the mixture well it holds its shape for cooking.
I have been growing and selling Shiitake Mushrooms for about ten years not long after I went veg. Portabellos are grown on animal manure and cannot be considered vegan. Shiitakes are so pure and grow right out of an oak log. I've been making a lot of extra money in my spare time selling the extra shrooms that I don't eat at the local farmers market.
