Cooking for Spanish Class

We have the opportunity to bring in a dish thats native to any country with spanish as the main language. We can get up to 20 extra credit points, depending on the difficulty of what we make! The only thing i've found so far in my cookbooks was the "Revolutionary Spanish Omelet with Saffron and Roasted Red Pepper-Almond Sauce", from VwaV. I was thinking about bringing in a dessert, and a main dish; do you guys have any dishes you would reccommend?

Foreign Language food days  ::).

I have no specific recipes, but maybe you could look up a bunch of recipes on non-veg sites and see if any are on vegweb. Or just browse around here. If you have to "prove" the complexity of the recipe like I had to do for French (in French) mention the difficulty of finding a recipe that met your dietary needs.

For a similar project assigned in 6th grade, i made flan from Venezuela. I didn't try it because in my 6th grade opinion, it looked gross, but my teacher said he and his wife loved flan and mine was so good that he wanted to take some home- good because none of the kids touched it. Unfortunately that was before i was vegan, but here's a recipe for vegan flan (i haven't tried it):

It's an idea, at least- i've seen flan featured in many spanish-speaking countries/restaurants.
Some of my favorite foods that would fit include fahitas, guacamole (!!!- that would be easy to take to class), or a rice dish. Dessert-wise how about something chocolate-cinnamon, which is classic mexican flavor combination (cookies maybe?) :)

Are churros vegan? I think so. Vegan cocoa made with soymilk and churros...yum. (Churros don't have to be steaming hot, and you could take the cocoa in a thermos...add cinnamon to give it the Mexican touch.)
As for dessert, yes, flan and fresh fruit (not together) are the classic "desserts" here in Spain. Cakes and cookies are for "merienda" (afternoon snack). The only time a person would eat a piece of cake for dessert might be at a restaurant, at home it's usually fruit or maybe icecream in the summer. They keep it light because most Spaniards can.not.LIVE without that merienda along in the afternoon, that bit of something sweet with coffee to keep them going until after 10 pm which is national suppertime!

Off topic, but yabbit, I'd be in big trouble if I lived in Spain. But I'd probably be a lot thinner. I go to bed most nights before 10. The DD (and that's Damn Dog) gets me up in the night and sometimes very early in the morning. By 9:30 I "turn into a pumpkin," as I say.  ::)

ohhh I remember doing this in my spanish class in high school (many, MANY years ago!).  I made some sort of veggie pocket thing (can't remember what it was called) but I didn't get full credit because they were too spicy!  lol  The majority of the class, including my teacher, had to run out in the hall to the drinking fountain.  However, I thought they were awesome & not too spicy at all.  ::)  Check out the regional recipe section here and you may be able to find something.

Same here! When DH takes retirement (so to speak...let's not go there) next month, we will have our supper at "merienda" time--about 6.30 or 7 PM. Then I can go back to going to bed like a sensible person, at 10 PM. Here it's called "going German". I call it common sense. He has acid reflux which means he needs to digest his food before lying down for the night; I just prefer supper at a decent time!

Yabbitgirl,
If everyone eats at 10, how late do they stay up? Until 1 or 2? And they get up early too?!
How romantic....  I can't eat that late...... if I even eat a virtuous salad in the  evening          I gain the next day. So I try not to eat past 5 lol  ;)

Good news guys! I showed my student teacher the recipe for the spanish omlet and she said that would be perfect. Then i pointed out it was vegan and had tofu instead of eggs...and to my suprise, she said "GREAT! Im a vegetarian too, i can't wait to try a new dish!"  When she said this, the whole class got quiet and they were like  Your a WHAT?!!.... The girl who sits next to me said "how the heck could you be a vegetarian? I couldn't give up that nice juicy steak. You guys are so weird!"  ::) So anyway...im going to try to make it in advance, see if it turns out okay, and i'll probably end up giving her the recipe cards if she likes them :) I also want to make a dessert. I'll show those silly omnis that vegan dishes taste just as good :P I really appreciate all of your suggestion!  i'll tell ya how it goes (its not untill next wednesday)!

Twink...what? I can't imagine churros have much in them besides flour, oil and water. Let me sniff around. I bet in the States they have milk in. Let me look.  (EDIT: I was right, and I'll be posting a recipe to "Submit Recipe" later today. Nothing un-vegan about them!)

Beans and Greens, yes, it's like there's some law that people HAVE to stay up till like 1 AM. I don't get it myself. I'm from the Midwest, my lights dim after about 10.30, about time Cronkite would have said, "and that's the way it was." Romantic?? How romantic is yawning in everyone's face?  ;D We kept Spanish time up till the last 2 yrs and now it's just rubbish, we're done with it as of June 1! Yaaay!

Dani: Great! Support from your teacher! Thrilled for you! Gee you could give her the link to VW and we'd have a new friend!

Real churros ARE round. And they do them either round-and-round in a big coil in the pan (in coffee shops) or individual little rings-with-legs (kind of like that Greek letter whose name I can't remember. Like a pretzel only not). A real churro is not flat. I don't know what they get up to in Latin America, but we invented the lovely things. And you do not roll them in sugar!! At any point!
I submitted a recipe for real Spanish churros which only contain salt, flour and water--just waiting for it to appear on the board. Do fry them in olive oil if poss, it gives a better flavour.
You *can* deep fry vegan wonton wrappers and dust with powdered sugar--if you must... ::)

thanks for all of the suggestions guys! The churros are a good idea, they look yummy! I decided to make the Revolutionary Spanish Omlet after all.. out of VwaV. My mom and i really enjoyed it; shes not a big tofu fan, and she said its the best way to have tofu so far, thats she's tried. The thing is... i spent almost 3 hours in the kitchen making it  :o I dont really think 6 hours of work is worth 20 extra credit points...  i dont know,we'll see.  Maybe i'll get more motivation by then :P!
