Chocolate chips substitute?
I REALLY want to make chocolate chip cookies! I found a recipe here called "Heavenly Chocolate Chip Cookies" that sounds delicious, and it calls for 1 vegan chocolate bar. The only thing is, the only vegan chocolate bars I can buy at Giant are flavored like orange, or cherries and almonds, or crystallized ginger. I was thinking about just buying the crystallized ginger in dark chocolate bar (amazing!) or looking for carob chips (I doubt Giant carries them lol) but there's no local health food store so I can't find much.
But then I saw this on some candy recipe:
"I didn't use chocolate chips.
Instead, I used 9 tbsps cocoa powder, 7 tbsps sugar, 3 tablespoons margarine (best if at least some of it is melted first), and about 4 or 5 tbsps water
All heated in a saucepan."
Used to make peppermint patties or something. Would it work if I made this mixture then dripped it onto like wax paper to make "chocolate chips"??? And would it still work (as intended or as I want to use it) if I used Splenda instead of sugar?
you can always try the recipe, but don't COUNT on it to work.
do you have gheridelli semi-sweet at your local store? they are vegan. a lot of the store brands are vegan, too.
yeah, i wouldn't bother with the recipe. check all the chocolate chips first! and did you check all the baking chocolate (not just the "for-eating" chocolate)? you might find something.
I was reading stuff on the Net and before they had chocolate chips, they used to sell a special knife-type thing to coarsely chop chocolate bars into little chunks. I bet if you used dark chocolate it would work.
I can't remember what website that was...something to do with the history of Toll House cookies. But seriously, choc chips are little chunks of chocolate. They don't have any magical special baking properties, or anything. Chop up a chocolate bar.
Just buy some chocolate chips and use them. I've seen several vegan store brand semi-sweet chips, and as mentioned, ghiardelli semi sweet are vegan. Baker's Semi-Sweet chocolate (it isn't chips) is also vegan if you have your heart set on using something you cut up. I'm pretty sure Ghiardelli Semi-Sweet also comes in bars, but it costs heaps more by weight than if you just buy the chips.
I wouldn't recommend using Splenda for anything as I think it's awful for you and they murdered tons of beagle puppies in testing. Not something I support.
I have found several vegan chocolate bars. Most of them are dark chocolate, so if you really like dark chocolate chip cookies that'd be fun. OOhh.... dark chocolate chunk oatmeal cookies... with pecans..... mm.... I may have to go bake now....
Why are you trying to make chocolate chips? Is it because you aren't near a health food store? Are you close to a Trader Joe's? Their semi sweet chips are vegan.
