okay, what in the world do I do with these chestnuts I bought?
I got chestnuts on clearence at the store. I remember a recipe on Lydis's Italy one time using chestnuts where she boiled theim with red wine. But I don't remember the recipe and the website is blocked here at work.
Any ideas on how to cook chestnuts? They are whole, raw, in the shell. Out of curiosity I opened one up and ate it raw, it was sweet but the texture was tough, like an acorn. It wasn't very good. Does cooking them make them softer?
Any suggestions?
hi there!
I had some chestnuts recently too. I roasted them and just ate them plain, as well as roasting them and then adding them to a stir fry with mushrooms and veggies. They do soften up once roasted and I'd imagine they taste better too - sweet and a bit, well, nutty. but not quite like any other nut I've had. tasty!
anyway. For roasting them I followed the instructions on this website: http://www.ehow.com/how_9920_roast-chestnuts-oven.html. For the stir fry I just roasted them as usual and added them in during the last couple minutes.
this looks like a tasty recipe that uses chestnuts: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=11338.0 There are a few more on this site that sound good too! happy chestnut eating :)
