Help!!! I've been veg for a while now and have been craving cabbage rolls- u know they're usually leaves of cabbage, wrapped around a lamb/beef/rice mixture, then slow cooked on the stove in a tomato based sauce. Sound familar? Anyone? I'm desperate- it's been like ten years and the sauce tastes sooo good on mashed potatoes. Mmmm, mashed potatoes......
There's TONS of vegan cabbage rolls in this site! If you just search, I'm sure you'll find plenty! My mom's side is Ukrainian, and traditionally Ukrainian cabbage rolls don't have meat in them, and are not cooked in tomato juice (yuk, if you ask me). All you need is some cooked rice, some onions, salt, pepper, cabbage, and you're good to go! When I was a meat eater, I used to put in some bacon into the mixture. You can certainly use vegan bacon if you like. We did that once, and you couldn't tell the difference! It was awesome! You can use a veggie ground as a meat substitute if that's how you used to eat them, and then put in whatever else you did before.
I've made these. They are great! My omni family loved them!

If using a fake meat, especially if it's frozen (I'm thinking Morning Star Grillers) you'd probably need slightly less liquid.
If you have an actual recipe from before and post it we can veganize it better than way. Getting you the closest result to what you had before. Cabbage rolls are all very different.
Brown rice mixed with chopped walnuts, pine nuts, and (if you like them) white raisins make a good cabbage roll filling.

That's funny that you say that. My family is Ukranian on my father's side and all the cabbage rolls they served contained a beef/rice mixture and were in a tomato sauce. Except for one holiday (I can't remember if it's Easter or the Orthodox Christmas) when the meat was left out due to religious beliefs. When I visit a couple are always made using a rice/mixed veggie stuffing and cooked in a seperate tomato sauce pan.

That's interesting. Everytime I had cabbage rolls, my Baba (very traditional Orthodox Ukrainian) would NEVER dare put meat or tomato sauce in! The bacon was actually my mom's idea.. lol! But growing up, I've always had cabbage rolls without meat or tomato sauce. I personally prefer it that way. I find tomato sauce takes away from the sourness of the cabbage rolls. And having meat in them.. yuk.. LOL!
My mother was German and our cabbage rolls were made with a ground beef/rice stuffing and covered in tomato sauce. And I am looking for a recipe that does not use vegan beef-like crumbles. I prefer to make everything from scratch if possible a (and when I have time).
I am currently living near what I call the Ukrainian capital of Canada (Vegreville, Alberta) and the whole region is saturated with Ukrainian culture. The traditional Ukrainian cabbage roll is made with just rice, wrapped in cabbage, sour cabbage, grape leaves or even spinach or swiss chard, possibly onions or bacon crumbles added to the rice and usually slathered in butter or occasionally cream. The filling is occasionally buckwheat instead of rice, which is gross to me. I like buckwheat in pancakes but not in cabbage rolls. The Ukrainian cabbage roll is also much smaller than the German one. Occasionally, lazy cabbage rolls are made where chopped cabbage, cooked rice, butter or oil or cream, possibly onions, garlic and bacon are just placed in a casserole dish and cooked in the oven. My boyfriend makes this with swiss chard. Yummy! And he occasionally puts a can of tomato soup over it. But I'm still looking for a replacement for my German cabbage rolls.

I think that in every culture people make food however they want to. I think it would be hard to specify something as a traditional dish when people make things differently than how their neighbors would. Like I said in my earlier post my Ukrainian family makes their cabbage rolls with a beef/rice mixture and a tomato sauce. I've never heard of a cabbage roll made with spinach, grape leaves, swiss chard or bacon. I'd say if you want a cabbage roll that doesn't have vegan beef-like crumbles in it then leave the crumbles out. No one is going to know how you like them or what you want in them besides you. Experiment. My twin made some recently that contained a mixture of rice, carrots, broccoli, onions, zucchini, leaks and ground boca covered in a homemade tomato sauce.
