Camping food - ideas please!
OK to be honest I've not searched this topic, so if it has already been covered please shout at me....and then point me in the right direction ;)
We are looking at going on a 4 day hiking trip in a couple of weeks and I just what ideas people had for food to take. It needs to be something that doesn't need to be kept chilled - obviously we're not going to be carrying a fridge around with us!
We may stay at a hostel one night that has a restaurant so we should only need to take enough for 4 lunches, 3 breakfasts and 2 or 3 dinners.
So far my ideas are:
> Lunches of crackers, dried fruits, tofu jerky (our local chinese supermarket sells flavoured dried tofu stuff), larabars.
> Dinners of mi goreng (yeah crap idea I know), maybe a portion of chilli and rice for the first night (frozen at home - will defrost by the time dinner arrives).
> Breakfast first day of tofu scramble (it'd be ok out of the fridge for 1 day, yeah?) then pancakes (take mix in a baggie to make up with water)
Seriously people I need ideas for lunches and dinners - help me!!
Here, Mori Nu brand tofu doesn't need refrigeration. Do they do a firm one you could cook like fried or something, if there were frying facilities somewhere? Then just take a blend of spices you like to flavour it. Or toss it in some ramen soup or with "chicken" broth powder.

Are you going to have a fire where you could cook things? Maybe some small potatoes that could be roasted? Can of beans? Or take it out of can and put in baggie. Peanut butter.
There is a "hiking and camping" category in recipes, but I don't know how helpful those are.
During my camping, hardcore travels and band touring; dried fruit, nuts, seeds, chocolate always prevail. On one tour I brought my camp stove, we cook so much rice and beans it was funny. It was more like a food not bombs event. Traveling excursions or quick inexpensive lunches I lean toward avocado, ketchup on a roll, bagel, baguette..
Breakfast:
- oatmeal, oatmeal, or oatmeal. You can mix the oatmeal different ways for different days if you mess around with brown sugar, nuts, dried fruit, etc.
- tea
- Don't bring pancake mix, it takes too long to cook so you'd need extra fuel, you'd have to pack oil, and it takes longer to clean up.
Lunch: I usually don't do much for lunch, I use it more for snacking and resting than for a proper meal
- protein powder
- pb&j
- instant hummus & pita (chose pita with preservatives, otherwise it'll probably mold)
- cookies
- vegan jerky (if you don't think it's disgusting)
- dried apple rings / other fruit
- bagels
- nutritional bars
Dinner:
- protein powder
- couscous cooked with vegan powdered broth and dried veggies (mushrooms!) & dehydrated beans
- noodles with gravy powder and dried vegan meat crumble nugget things (do they have those in NZ?)
- instant potatoes with vegan veggie soup mix
- hot apple cider or homemade cocoa mix
Fresh dill stays good for a few days. You could work something in with it on one of the first days.
canned baked beans, canned chili, canned soup, bread, peanut butter and jelly (jelly would probably keep), meal bars, trail mix (nuts + dried fruit), chips and salsa even canned bean dip (salsa and bean dip would probably keep)

We'll have our camp stove and pans and stuff so yes we can cook.
I would do baked beans, but Niall is afraid of them, so they are a no go. But can't beleive I didn't think of canned / packet soups.
Oh and oatmeal is a great idea, again can't believe I didn't think of it!
We have a spall an of spray oil, so frying stuff is ok, so yeah maybe I could fry up some veggies to go with cous cous.

Canned food items and instant food items are great idea. You can take those for your camping trip.
