Bob's Red Mill TVP, GMO Free?

I just wanted to share this reply I received from Bob's Red Mill. I noticed that none of their products say Non-GMO on them and started to get "freaked out" about it. I have been using some of their products (organic and a few non organic as well), for so many years, that I never read the packaging any longer. Here is the reply I received:

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your email.  All our products are identity preserved and Non-GMO, including the Soy Beans used in the making of our TVP.  This means that the seed that was planted for the plants that yield the grain originated from a non-GMO source.  We have little control over factors such as wind drift and pollen drift, so we do shy away from advertising our products as non-GMO and printing it on our packaging.  Hope this information is helpful and have a terrific day.

PS: TVP is one of the few products that I purchase that is non-organic. The only reason for that is that I have never seen any other brands of TVP other then the one mentioned above, not even at Whole Food's Market. Does anyone know of an Organic TVP or TSP?
thanks,
-dave

I researched this stuff a few years back and discovered that all TVP/TSP is a product of Archer Daniels Midland - they are the sole manunfacturer - then they wholesale it to others who add flavours, etc.

I really doubt that ADM produces more than one product (it is extruded soy flour, if I remember correctly), but they would be the people to check with to see if they have diversified, and if such a thing exists. I have phoned them for info before and met with success reaching someone. I think I just called 800-555-1212 and asked for a number for them.

As you know, soy is heavily GMO here in the US. In Europe, where it is monitored much more closely, it can be very expensive. I spotted $8./pound tofu there recently. And soy powder was about $20 for an amount I buy here for $5.

If you find out that they have a new organic product, I'd love to hear it  :)

As promised, here is the website where I ordered my organic TVP. They come in all shapes and sizes from cutlets to crumbles to chunks. 5 lbs will last a long time-for about 20 bucks!

They sell non-organic as well, but I bought the organic and am pretty happy with it. I got the chunks, and when I want crumbles I just put it in a bag and whack it with a mallet.

They now send me a large newspaper flier every month or so which I would rather not have, but it makes for great bathroom readin!  ::)
