Hi all...ok here is perhaps the weirdest question you've ever seen. I have been eating roasted red beets lately. I love them! Anywaaaaay...now my "# 2's" are violet, and my pee is sort of pink!!??? ??? Has anyone else EVER heard of or experienced this??? I'm not too freaked out right now, but I cannot find any info on this topic anywhere, and I figured w/ all the vegans here, someone has to eat beets besides me. :-\ Go ahead and laugh...its ok....but any info will help! Thanks-
Dafodil
My boss has diverticulosis and sometimes that causes bleeds. He has had several false alarms after a night of eating beets. Maybe it just depends on how much you consume.
Yes, beets to turn bodily fluids colors. Its pretty common normal and typical. :o
Thanks...I just got off the phone w/ a doc...he said its normal. Just weird to see/experience! ::)
I have had the same experience........
I've never noticed that before... I'm so going to have a glass of beet juice and see what happens!
Hooray for science!
I had a friend actually go to the doctor because he thought he was bleeding. When the MD asked about his diet, after concluding there was no blood in the urine, he died of embarrasment when he remembered he ate beets.
Speaking of bodily fluids, I hate the way asaparagus makes my urine smell, before I new any better I was thinking I was getting a UTI or something. :D
Ew, I hate the stinky asparagus pee. Ick. But I am excited about asparagus season, because that means it'll be warmer!
And on a similar note, Get Crafty (http://www.getcrafty.com) has some beet related recipes (http://www.getcrafty.com/blogs.php?user=kitchenette&entry=6435).
This might sound crazy, but I have always refused to eat asparagus. Ever since I was a child, I heard that it makes your pee smell before I ever tasted it, and now I just can't get that out of my head. So... I don't eat it. And I still don't know what it tastes like. I just envision pee whenever I see it, which isn't very appetizing.
I guess I'm lucky I never heard that before--asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables! And honestly, I've never noticed my pee smell bad after eating even large quantities of asparagus (but I don't go around smelling my pee either). Beets--another one of my favorite veggies--do cause all kinds of noticeable changes to my pee even when I eat small quantities, sometimes for days afterwards.

It would seem that only 50 percent of people have a urine response to asparagus. I do and personally, I like it.

I don't go around smelling my pee either, but this I do smell. I'd never heard of it until it happened to me. I guess people are different.

tweety: yes, what's to not like about it? i do not find it offensive in any way. and i like the evidential reminder that what we consume does have an impact on our bodies.

That must be why I get some amount of pleasure when I look into the toilet bowl and see lots of pink after eating beets. I think it actually looks pretty--prettier than normal, anyway.

It smell like a UTI to me (I'm a nurse remember). But I can't argue with that perspective and you're certainly allowed.
I have just read the comments... :D You all are funny! I'm laughing my butt off over here about all the conversation about asparagus pee!!! :D Thanks for the info though!!
