Does anyone have a vegan or vegan-adaptable recipe for barley bread? ???
It doesn't have to be totally barley flour, maybe half-and-half barley and wheat...
And I'd kind of expect barley bread to be made with baking soda, not yeast, but I'm not sure on this.
I'm'nna go googling for adaptable recipes myself, but here's hoping an answer will come quicker from VW. ;)
I know this was from yesterday and you probably already found the recipe for Barley Bread but I wanted to share a site I like because it has so many alternative bread recipes. It is from the people who sell Bob's Red Mill products. I know they have the site so they can sell things but it has so many different kinds of recipes. They did have a Barley Bread but it was a yeast bread and I think it was vegan. This is the address:

Thanks Viatrix! :) That recipe looks really interesting, actually, and different to the ones I found... which were mostly repeats of each other over many websites. They were mostly veganisable, but not all very barley-ey, i.e. too much wheat or other flour.
The trick with bread recipes is it's not always easy to sub different grain flours, 'cause baking - especially yeast bread - is more like a chemical equation, and so much can go wrong.
But maybe I'm overthinking this. I'll give it a go. 8) Wish me luck!
Best of luck -- please share your recipe when you find one you like. I love barley and would love to know what fresh barley bread is like!
I sure will share, ducky, when it's worth sharing. I'm afraid my first attempt hardly rose at all. It was marginally edible, but not what I was hoping for. Might try a barley-wheat mix today. :)
For those who do home brewing, you can put the "used" barley to good use making barley bread. There's a vegan barley bread recipe avaliable on the Recipe page of the Quincy House website: http://www.quincyhouse.net/recipes.php. Scroll down to the breakfast section. I'm a pretty big fan, having just made a half dozen loafs a couple days ago, throwing most of them in the freezer. If you've got suggestions for tweaking the recipe, they can be sent to eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%72%65%63%69%70%65%73%40%71%75%69%6e%63%79%68%6f%75%73%65%2e%6e%65%74%22%3e%72%65%63%69%70%65%73%40%71%75%69%6e%63%79%68%6f%75%73%65%2e%6e%65%74%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')).
Hi, Aaron Linderman, Quincy resident.
I read your profile on the Quincy House site. If you post more, here's the set up. We recently made a second board, the Free For All board. The Q&A board is reserved for recipes discussions, like this thread, and supportive NVR (not veg*n related) discussions. The Free For All board is for debates.
The recipes posted on Quincy are all vegetarian. Are all of the people there vegetarian, or did it just work out that way?
