Bag of Arame--now what?

Hi everyone. Picked up a package of Arame at the supermarket today. I don't think I've ever made Arame before and thought I would give it a try and also hoped that my kids would like it. I searched this site for recipes for "Arame" and all I got were recipes for "Caramel".  Not exactly what I had in mind!

Does anyone eat this and can you share with me some tips for preparing it? Thanks in advance.

Hiya,

It's a type of Japanese seaweed but has a milder flavour than nori, for example, which is used for sushi and comes in sheets. Arame is highly nutritious and grows wild along japan's rocky pacific coast where young, wide leaved plants are hand-harvested in late summer, simmered all day in their own juices and then cut into thin strips and naturally sun-dried.

I use Arame in salads, soups and stir frys.  All you have to do is soak it in cool water for 10-15 minutes (it doubles in volume!) and then use.

One of my favourite ways of cooking it is lightly frying some freshly grated root ginger and then turning the heat off and stirring in the reconstituted arame in quickly (to preserve nutrients) before serving as a side dish with a grain, cooked veg, raw veg and some protein like tempeh. Simple and easy but full of flavour!

that sounds good macro!!

I have had arame as a salad... though it is in little strips,
Mix with sliced avocado, peeled carrot, scallons and sprinkle w/ sesame seeds. Its so wonderful w/ sesame-miso dressing.. or a dressing slightly sweet. its delish!
im assuming you can also use it in soups? It is very good for detoxifying and clearing your body of heavy metals.
bon apetite!

if you come up w/ anything new, post it!

Yum!  I like it in salads like the one LucidAnne just described, with lime juice in the dressing.  For some reason that really sets off the flavor for me.

LOL Baypuppy!

You might have been thinking of Amaranth? (If not, it's a good excuse anyway!) ;D

Lucidanne- I'll be sure to post any recipes if they come to mind....

I use arame seaweed in stews and soups. Just put it in at the end of the cooking time so it still has some bite when the dish is ready.
I also sometimes add it to my breakfast porridge which I know sounds strange, but with a brown grain like barley fx its actually nice for a change every now and then.

How in the world did you guys find a thread that was almost a year old?

BTW, that bag of arame is still in my closet. I tried it a couple of times but just didn't like it.

J Hughes--

Well, the profile is on my to-do list.  But I hear you are working on yours--literally!  Congratulations.

BTW, what IS THAT you are drinking in that photo?  It looks like a pitcher of beer. Yes?

THANKS!  ;D The ol' profile will be growing!
It IS a large, large beer. Not a pitcher, but if there was a spout it could have been!
It was taken in Bavaria in July.
OH and at our (also large) table I finished mine first! ...I'm so proud. ::)  heehee

There is nothing like Biergartens in Germany and Austria. They are so great. I remember going to one in Saltzburg that was amazing.
When they try to do "biergartens" in New York, they wind up just disgusting.  Not sure why.

Today is my day off from work and I am making the unchicken cutlets from Bryanna Clark Grogan's vegan feast blog.  I'm going to cook them in my newly acquired slow cooker.  I've got to go food shopping, etc. before the kids come home from school. But I will report back on the unchicken cutlet results.  If I don't turn off the computer I wind up spending hours on it and I get nothing done (and then later I'm sad).

I hope you feel great.
