Allergic to Soy

Being Asian, I grew up eating Tofu at dinner every day.  Whatever was for dinner, a block of Tofu, cut into cubes, topped with Soy Sauce and Green Onions, was always a side dish.  Hence, it has been my favorite food since I can remember.  Around 10 years ago, I became allergic to a lot of things, including Tofu. Tofu and Edamame were the staples of my diet; now, without them, I feel my diet is slightly less healthy, I tend to eat more carbohydrates than I'd like.  I also was diagnosed with Thyroid problems and hence avoid Tofu.  My question is, what kinds of Vegan, Non Soy Protein sources are out there?  I've used Seitan, Raw Almonds and Rice Protein.  :)

Seitan is my favorite, but there's also lots of beans and legumes. Lentils, black beans, garbonzos....you can make some really tasty soups, rice and bean dishes, "meat" loaves, burgers and breakfast scrambles.

I also can't have soy, but another thing to keep in mind is that even the whole grains and other foods you eat have SOME protein in them.  I just try to make sure I eat 2 med-small or 1 large serving of beans a day with maybe a few nuts or seeds,, or seitan on days when i'm getting a little tired of beans.

I find raw vegetables and salads and raw fruit eaten throughout the day also helps with some of the thyroid side effects. (I'm hypothyroid). It keeps my metabolim moving.  I'll also split my meals up....like I'll split my breakfast into two parts, like maybe I'll eat the fruit now and the oatmeal 2 hours later, same with lunch.  Hope some of this helped!! It's frusterating, but can be done.

I've also heard of chickpea tofu and Peanut tofu, but cannot attest to their goodness....

Thank you for that advice!  I'm going to look up those other types of Tofus as well.  I soooo miss my Tofu!  And I'm glad to hear from anther Thyroid person, it does make meal choices a little bit challenging!  Thank you again!

Awesome!  I tried searching for Peanut Tofu, but didn't find it. Is it a recipe or commercially available?  :D

how did you find out about a soy allergy? i found out i am dairy intolerant, because when i would drink milk, eat cheese, or eat products with either, i would get really bad gas, have other digestive issues, and feel sick.  i figured out that uh, duh, when i eat those things, i get icky, so when i stopped eating them, the ickiness went away.  does that sound familiar??? is that how you found out??

not necessarily directed at the OP...anyone feel free to chime in :)
