French Toast (sans Bananas)

What you need:

3 tablespoon tahini
3/4 cup soy/rice milk
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2-3 tablespoon flour
cinnamon and nutmeg
stale french bread or THICKLY CUT stale sandwich bread
a little oil

What you do:

I haven't made this since I've been home from college, but as I read through the other French Toast recipes, I noticed that an allergy to bananas was saddening breakfast for some. I personally hate bananas, so this is my version. I've experimented with it a lot, so I'd appreciate feedback.
With a whisk or a fork mix the tahini (I use Joyva brand because it is very finely ground) and the soy milk until you have some smooth nutty milk. If both are pretty cold from the fridge, this could take some time. Listen to your favorite song. It helps, I swear.
Add the maple syrup and vanilla. Add the flour a tablespoon at a time. You may not need all three, depending on how thick your tahini was. The consistency you're looking for is almost like pancake batter--runny pancake batter. Add cinnamon and nutmeg to taste (and you CAN taste it because unlike regular french toast, there are no raw eggs to make you gag!). Use day-old vegan french bread sliced at least 1/2 thick. The thicker the vegan bread, the longer you let it sit in the goo. This is why stale vegan bread is good, you can soak the vegan bread without making it soggy. I've tried it with thickly cut homemade wheat vegan bread, and it was good, but it was kind of limp in that sad, not-so-fresh, sort of way.
On medium heat in a good non-stick pan pour a nickle-sized drop of oil and coat the pan. I'm an olive oil freak, so that's what I use. Put your vegan bread slices in and fry on both sides for 3-5 minutes. If the heat is too high, the coating will burn and the inside will be wet, so adjust the heat as you go. You may need to add a little extra oil now and then.
Then eat it howe'ver you like. The last time I made this, my dad and sister (both meat and dairy eaters) couldnt tell that it wasn't real French toast. Maybe they were just humoring me...but you'll tell me the truth, won't you?

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This is a great recipe for french toast.  I haven't found a vegan recipe that I liked until this one.  I was a little skeptical about the tahini.  I thought it might overpower all the other flavors, but it ended up being pretty mellow after being cooked onto the bread.  There was just enough batter for one loaf of french bread, but I sliced it rather thickly.  I added a dash of salt because even sweet things need a little salt to bring out the flavor.  I also added about double the amount of vanilla, but the batter just seemed to soak up the flavor for some reason.  I would definitely make this again.  I think next time I will slice the bread a little thinner and let it soak a bit longer in the batter.

I had no problems with sticking.  I was using a good quality non-stick pan and some spray oil.  I had it on medium heat.

This is the first time I tried to make French Toast since going vegan...it was incredible! My eggs-and-dairy-addict grandmother couldn't tell the difference.

...as for the "sticking to the pan" problem: I've found that nonstick pans are actually pretty terrible for making pancakes, homemade veggie burgers, vegan latkes, etc. I use  a cast-iron skillet, and it works pretty wonderfully. You'll need more oil than a nickel-sized amount if you use cast iron,  but it's what people used back in the day before the Scary Teflon Fellas came and bestowed their, um..."gift" on us all. Cast-iron skillets are almost impossible to find in most stores these days, but there are usually some kicking around yard sales, eBay, etc.

I've tried numerous vegan french toast recipes over the years ranging from banana to silken tofu substitutes and all have failed to live up to their name. I just made this, curious about using tahini, and wow! These were delicious and perfect. *two billion thumbs up* :D I added some flax seed, confectioners sugar, and banana on top to finish it off. Dee-lisssh.

This tastes just like traditional french toast as I remember it. I hadn't had french toast in years and years, and I was so excited to try out this recipe! Maybe it's just me, but this was pretty much the messiest food I've ever cooked. French toast batter everywhere, including all over me. But it was fun to make and super tasty.

I used a non-stick pan very lightly greased it with Earth Balance, and no sticking problems.

This recipe is better than any French Toast recipe I've tried so far.  I love the light nutty flavor the Tahini brings to it.  I think it could even beat a regular French Toast recipe with eggs!!

This was FANTASTIC!  I'm a lacto-ovo veg mainly, but since I only cook vegan at home, I thought I would give this a shot with the last of my french bread I made last week.  WOW.  Coming from someone who hasn't been 'missing' French toast per say, I must admit, this is 100x better! It had so much more flavour!  The tahini wasn't over powering and really worked with the french toast.  I'm glad to be able to find something other than hummus to use it for :P
My 'batter' didn't really come out that thick, and I used more flour than was called for, but I couldn't taste a problem with it after I cooked it!  I think this recipe is so much better than regular french toast and has so much more potential if you want to tweak it.  I'll definitely be making this EVERY time I'm at the end of a loaf!

If you love tahini as much as I do, you can increase it with good results - at least, it worked for me.  (I put in less flour to compensate.)  I also put in a ton of cinnamon, and we ate it with just a little syrup, and it was great.

This was great. My very picky vegan boyfriend ate all his before I could even finish cooking mine! I might use a little less tahini next time, as it had a very slight bitter taste sometimes, but maybe that was because of my lackadaisical mixing of ingredients. Great recipe, and I'll definitely make it again.

This is yummy.  I used peanut butter as suggested by some posters.  The only negative?  Mine kept sticking to the pan.  :(

I just made this recipe for the first time in a while and forgot how freaking delicious it is. I used fresh nutmeg and also added a dash of coriander for some extra deelish spiciness.I topped it with freshly picked pink lady apples and drizzled with maple syrup. Also served the tempeh bacon from VWAV on the side. My omni friend said it was the best breakfast I've ever made. Thank you!
