You are here

Hey everyone, newbie here.

My name's Katelyn, and I've made the switch to vegan about two weeks ago.  As far as I'm concerned its permanent.  There's been some mishaps as I learn what ingredients are in certain foods, but so far so good.

Anyway, I'm new to this forum so I thought I'd introduce myself.  I live in NJ and I'm looking for some people to hang out with and meet.  I came here because I'd like them to at least have one thing in common with me, and a healthy and conscious diet is important to me (in aspects of animal well-being and, even more relevant for me, health).  I'm a certified holistic health counselor but I'm not currently practicing.  But, as you can tell, I'm big into health.  I'm not perfectly healthy myself but I'm trying.  My ultimate goal is to go 80/10/10 raw vegan.

Besides health I'm into animals, books, video games, deep conversations, hanging out at parks and just doing things outdoors in general...  I also like to make things.  I make my own jewelry and I'm learning to sew.

If anyone's in the NJ/NY, or even PA area and wants to hang out, let me know!  :)

Hi Katelyn!  That's awesome that you're two weeks into being vegan!  :w00t!:

I like to do jewelry and sewing as well.  I got a new machine for Christmas but I have yet to use it.....gotta get on that.....

Welcome to vegweb! :)

Hi, Katelyn!  Hanging out here makes the transition easier.

What's a 80/10/10 raw vegan?

I used to sew more.  I'm thinking of getting Me On A Pumpkin.  You can download a picture and it will print out a picture to carve into a pumpkin.  I'm thinking of using it to make art quilts of my favorite musicians.

Kissmekate, I got my sewing machine I think two years ago for christmas and I JUST started using it!  Lol.  But I made my little cousin a blanket (basically just sewing over the edges so it looks neat, with a big sheet of fleece... no big deal), so that was fun.  Thanks for the welcome :)

Humboldt_honey, 80/10/10 raw vegan is a diet that was "created", or at least outlined, by Dr. Douglas Graham.  It consists of eating 80% of your calories from carbs, 10% from fat and 10% from protein.  You do this by eating a lot of fruit and leafy greens, with occasional fatty fruits like avocados or nuts.  I've done it for days at a time and I've felt wonderful every time, but it costs a LOT of money when you can't grow your own food.  The summer makes it easier cause I can grow a little bit of produce but its still impractical for NJ weather.

I had never heard of that Me On A Pumpkin thing.  Thats really neat!  I just looked at a demo on the site.  That's really useful... I've been meaning to make some shirts but I needed a pattern to put on front... if I used that program though they sort of lay an outline for you.  Thanks.

Hi Hespedal.  Its really sad that it costs so much.  Why can't hey put subsidies on fruits and veggies instead of meat and dairy?! So not fair.

Hey Nadalia! Welcome to the vegweb community--I'm sure you will love it here :)

Wow! The 80/10/10! That's some serious stuff--good luck with that! I have friends who have been trying to do it for awhile, I give them (and you) so many props for trying, it is not an easy lifestyle to maintain! Who ever thought that there would be a harder lifestyle than vegan  ;D

Anyways--welcome again!

Haha, I just made one of those two!  I bought a big piece of fleece on sale and just zigzagged over the edges (this was over winter break before I got my sewing machine).  It's like my favorite blanket ever. :)>>>
