Vegan (soon-to-be) Mom - new to VegWeb & new to Northern California
Hello! I'm Jen and am going on my fourth year as a vegan. I feel very fortunate that my husband has been taking the same steps towards health and more compassionate living with me. We are expecting our first child, a boy, in just a few months and yes, absolutely he will be raised vegan. I got pregnant just weeks after our move from Southern California's Inland Empire to Northern California's Gold Country (near Sacramento). I think all the trees and fresh mountain air must have agreed with me!
It's a little scary going through a pregnancy so far away from my family. We don't know anyone in the area yet - I'm pretty anti-social, really. We don't really have many vegan friends (except those we've converted...hooray!) and I'm hoping that as issues crop up it'll be beneficial to have a network of people who've "been there and done that" to turn to (YOU GUYS) and hopefully I can return the favor when it comes to topics I can help out with.
We have a huge family and everyone still lives in So Cal so we visit every few months. The only thing I really miss besides family are all the vegan dining options in Los Angeles. I'm looking forward to trying out the restaurants in the Bay Area. I love food probably more than I should! I enjoy cooking and baking and trying out new veg products. I love Brussels sprouts and tacos (not together)!
I am pretty passionate about plant-based nutrition in regards to health and disease prevention. I believe that animal "foods" are not part of a natural/optimal diet for humans even thought we obviously can live on them if we need to (the human body is amazing) and enjoy discussing the topic with people who might not agree. I want to home school. I use only all-natural beauty products. I am currently struggling with the issues of vaccines and circumcision and am spending a lot of time researching both topics. I like punk rock, old folk/rural American music, classic cowboy stuff (pre-50's), children's music (yes, I listen to it even when no kids are around), and a ton of other stuff. I want to watch less TV so we're not chained to the set when the baby gets here (don't want to get him into the habit). I love nature and hiking and exploring sites from early California history. We love offroading. We're huge fans of the National Park System (Death Valley is one of my most favorite places). I'm crafty, like ice is cold, but I haven't done ANYTHING in the months since we've moved. I read a lot. That's all I can think of, but it should give you a good idea of who I am. I hope to learn more about a lot of you, too! See you around!
Hi. Check out Stroller Derby
Hi JenDiggity,
I'm in the Sacramento area too. Welcome. I know many of the historical sites and some good vegan restaurants in Sacramento. I love exploring the historical sites too.
I've totally been hanging out in there, Honey! I've been reading all the old topics and have even piped up a couple times. I'm sure I'll mostly be posting in there as I try to get this whole mom thing figured out.
RSWhitaker - I'd love to hear any recommendations you've got! I posted a list of some of the places I've tried in the LOVE THE LOOT forum (under the "Daiya Cheese available in Sac" thread), but I might have missed some. So far we haven't ventured out too much for sightseeing, but it was exploring some of the gold camp related stuff on vacations that made us fall in love with the area and move here.
I've tried in the LOVE THE LOOT forum (under the "Daiya Cheese available in Sac" thread. . .
I think I started that thread.
Here are my favorites. . .
Andy Nguyen's, Asian, Buddhist (Broadway)
Au Lac Veggie, Asian, Buddhist (Stockton Blvd.)
India Oven (Truxel near WalMart)
Addis Ababa, Ethiopian (Fulton and Alta Arden)
Andy Nguyen's and Au Lac Veggie have great fake meat/fish dishes. Au Lac is less known, not the best neigborhood. It's small, clean, good service, amazing food, nice atmosphere and cheap. My family are omnis and they all love Au Lac.
Awesome! Best of luck with everything!
Hey Jen, always happy to welcome another mommy!
Thanks, guys!
RSWhitaker, if you haven't made the trek out to Ike's Quarter Cafe in Nevada City (the best vegan French toast you've ever had plus a slew of Cajun-inspired sandwiches...they even make their own BBQ sauce), you MUST! Also, Latitudes in Auburn has a mean tempeh burger and their nutty tacos are amazing as well.
Thanks, guys!

Yum!
I'll definitely have to try those. Thanks for the tip!
Just to tempt you further, I just got back from dinner at Ike's and had the most amazing cornmeal and pecan crusted thinly sliced tofu with greens, roasted veggies, and cornread on the side with a dessert of brown sugar coconut custard pie in a chocolate chip cookie crust with soy whipped cream. I also took several bites of my husband's New Mexico burger (it was the special) with green chili Veganaise, a mole sauce and tempeh. I just might burst! It was worth it, though.
Hi! Congrats on almost being a mommy!
I have a question... does your doctor support you being vegan while pregnant? A lot of doctors around here (at least my doctors) are dead set against it. My OBGYN voiced strongly to me that I would have to change my diet were I to get pregnant. Which would suck, because I don't really digest meat or dairy well at all. Overall my doctors aren't very supportive anyways, but if you have one that is then kudos!
Welcome and definitely check out stroller derby, our parenting forum! Also, I love Sacramento, I just visited last Sunday! Have you been to the new Sugar Plum Vegan Bakery on K street? It is DELICIOUS!!
Hi Guys!
RX - My doctor got all huffy when he learned I was vegan (yes, he even asked how I was getting protein!). Get this: the conversation started because he was recommending Del Taco's Big Fat chicken taco and I told him I didn't eat that sort of thing. So he thought that would be fine food to eat during pregnancy, but fresh fruits, veggies, and grains whoa ho ho! Ugh. He referred me to a nutritionist who raved about my diet and pretty much shut him up. I'm sorry your doctors are so ignorant about nutrition, but it is actually pretty normal. They get hardly ANY training in nutrition in med school. I would suggest seeing a nutritionist that would be willing to talk to your obstetrician when you decide to have a baby and let them know that a vegan diet is recognized as healthy for all stages of life. Period.
Laura - I have been to Sugar Plum! They made my baby shower cakes, even (the omnivores were wowed). I've only tried one sandwich and then their Easter brunch - excellent stuff! We plan to go back soon and try some other dishes. It looks like they're expanding their menu some with daily specials. I'm glad they're there!
Welcome & best of luck with your pregnancy!
