Hi everyone!
I have just recently switched from being a total carnivore to a vegan diet. I watched Food Inc. and read Skinny Bitch and that was what sealed it for me: No more animal products. Anyway, I look forward to meeting everyone here!
Hi Noel :D
I'm a relatively new vegan as well, and also made the switch after reading SB. Some of my other favorite reads include The Food Revolution and The China Study. Food, Inc. was also pretty amazing.
Make sure you check out the site, browse through all the great recipes, and get to know everyone on here (even if you mostly lurk, like me >:D )
You will find AMAZING support and so much wisdom from the members of vegweb.
Welcome! It's not easy being vegan, but vegweb has tons of great recipes and people. Start with the vegan mac and cheese on this site (it is in the top ten on 'most popular recipes'). I keep nutritional yeast on hand at all times in part because of this recipe. Good luck!
Thanks!! I will definitely have to check that out. :>
Hi & welcome! Kudos for acting on knowledge -- a lot of folks never do!
I also like the mac-n-cheez mentioned above, tho imo it may be an acquired taste -- it's good in its own right, but different than the traditional dish... Also definitely check out http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7126.0 -- this was PRICELESS to me, when I went dairy-free; dry, it's like parmesan, & it makes AMAZING queso-style dip... I think its a great recipe for newly (OR oldly!) animal-free chefs.
Anyway -- happy new year, & see ya around!
Hiya, I'm new here & a new vegan, too! I've been slowly paring down since last year when I read Eat to Live and Skinny B. I think the two best suggestions I've gotten from a vegan friend is to plan ahead for meals & cook in bulk.
Congrats!
Welcome to VegWeb!
I agree, NLveganmama. I sit down at the beginning of every week and plan my meals for that week. I put half of whatever I make in the fridge, and the other half in the freezer. That way I always have a variety of things to choose from when I don't feel like cooking.
yay for u! skinny bitch is what changed me for the good too! and i did enjoy food inc.... u should check out "the world according to monsanto" it is on youtube it is a great movie as well :) being vegan is the bestest :)
Hi All,
I am also new here and new to this kind of site so please bear with me. Vegan now for 9 days on the ETL diet. I have already lost 7 lbs but I am starting to find these first 6 weeks a bit to strict. Fruit is not the problem, but I am having trouble with the veggies. Right now my diet consists completely of Fruits, Vege, a few walnuts, some flax seeds, beans, a small amount of plain oatmeal and 2 slices of sprouted bread once a week. I eat the same thing everyday for breakfast; fruit, a few walnuts mixed with a very small amount of oatmeal. For the first time in my life I actually dread to eat! I have run out of ideas for lunch and dinner. I have a huge salad for lunch and another for dinner with some fruit for dessert. I am not allowed oil right now and can't find a good low cal dressing so I have been using lemon juice. Anyway I know once the first 6 weeks are over, this way of eating will be a lot more easier. If anyone out there is on this plan I would love some help!
Thanks for listening....
Jenette
Congrats!
I'm trying to Vegan too. I been Vegan for about a week. I've ovo-lacto for about 9 years.
Welcome to VegWeb! You can do it, we're all here to support you! Almost all of us were full carnivores once and so we know how it goes. If you ever need any advice or help, the forums are a great place to look for it. Being vegan is kinda the greatest so I know you're gonna love it!
Also jenetted - being vegan isn't about restricting what you consume. It's about opening up to all kinds of new foods! I never would have known all about Lebanese and West African cuisines if I hadn't become vegan. I eat so much more and better foods being vegan than I ever did as an omnivore or even a vegetarian. I hope being on a restricted diet isn't what you associate with veganism because that's not what it's about! You'll naturally feel better, more energized, and likely have lower cholesterol and fewer health problems, even if you don't lose tons of weight...I hope you'll keep that in mind!
That said, good luck on the plan and I hope when it becomes less rigorous that you'll explore some of the 30,000 recipes for delicious vegan food that we have on the site!
I also became vegan after Skinny Bitch last year and I honestly never felt better. And its so easy especially with all the support from my family and everyone on here. I haven't had a lot of trouble except for living here on campus. RIT is not too vegan friendly... But still. I will never go back! YAY!
