New here

Good Morning

Just introducing myself.  My name is Jenn, and I live in the Toronto area. I've always been a conscious consumer (try to buy locally and "free range" whenever possible), but it was just recently that I became aware of the horrors which animals must suffer through just so we can eat.  I now consider myself to be an ovo-vegetarian, and I only use eggs which my friend (who runs a hobbie farm) supplies me with.

My only problem right now is that my partner and children think I'm crazy for giving up dairy/meat products.  They want nothing to do with my choice.  Since I am the food shopper in the house, I still have to buy meat/dairy for everyone else.  I offer my veggie meals to whoever wants to try (and sometimes they do) but right now, we're still having two separate meals at our house (one meat, one veg) Anyone else dealing with or had a similar problem?

Anyways, glad to be here and I look forward to chatting with everyone

welcome!
You could make a meat and a few veggies, and just make a meal of the veggies.  Maybe add rice or beans.  There are lots of great recipes on here!

My mom thinks salt is extreme and is aghast at the thought of garlic or onion in her meal.  Cucumbers are too strong for her.  Really.  She doesn't eat them.  My dad did most of the cooking and he'd start off with a meal she could eat and plate her food.  Then he'd add more seasoning for my sister and me and plate our food.  And then he'd add super hot stuff for himself.

I think that would work in your situation.  As I tell omnis who think being vegan is weird:  everyone eats vegan, it's just that some people add animal to it.  There are all sorts of healthy vegan things to make that could be topped with carcass after you have your plate.

Congratulations on your decision. I know it can be tough when loved ones aren't ready. As the main shopper in the house, you do have the opportunity to start making more meals that are vegan. Sometimes they won't even realize it until they're halfway through! As the cook in the house I coddled my boyfriend for a while, but finally I said "Look, if you want milk so bad you'll have to buy it yourself." He did for a few months, got tired of it, and then realized he liked almond milk so much better anyway. Everybody won there.

Have fun with your new journey. You've found a fabulous resource in VW!
