Sophie's choice: a hypothetical dilemma.

Rules:

- the methods of meat and dairy production stay the same, regardless of your choice.
- "strict vegans" will eschew not only leather but also honey, wool, silk, etc.
- if you choose the former, you will of course fall into the former category if you so desire.

What would YOU choose, and why?

>:D

hmmm... good question!

I think the first one would be the most beneficial to the animals. The only animals that I can see maybe having a better time in the second scenario is pigs... hmmm..

Am I the only one who would sit around pondering where such a magical power came from and why I was chosen to have it :D?

I'd probably make half the world strict vegans then try to wage a war on the other half ^-^

Leather jackets are often made from pig skin (I actually used to have one :(  )
And footballs......

Hmmmm.  My gut reaction was definitely the first one.  My concern was that if everyone in the world was lacto-ovo veg, would there be any drive to go vegan?  Or would they all just settle smugly into their vegetarianism?

Also, an ovo-lacto veg world without meat consumption is just not feasible, in my mind.  You can't very well have dairy without meat consumption.  It would just follow naturally when people realized they were throwing away viable meat with all the egg and dairy production.  The methods of production just CAN'T stay the same for an ovo-lacto world, even though you stipulated it.  So I think that option is flawed.  A 100% ovo-lacto world just doesn't exist.

Besides, I don't want to be ovo-lacto vegetarian.

So yes, the first one definitely.

And driving gloves. And golf gloves. All the truly expensive sport-gloves are made from pigskin. Yeah, there are cheaper counterparts, but in the snooty "top of the world" catalogues and shops they're all pigskin.

Question-if meat eaters turn ovo lacto veggie, should we also presume that milk and egg demand will go up?
Or that it'll stay the same?

And has the original post been edited?
I seem to remember it being different, so I'm not sure if we're still meant to reply or not>_<.

The original post has not been edited. I can't see that milk and egg demand would go up drastically, I certainly didn't up my intake of those things when I stopped eating meat. YMMV.

The majority of people I've come across who turn vegetarian quickly upped their egg and milk consumption.
Firstly from protein and calcium scares.
Secondly as it's a quick alternative.
Thirdly because eating in restaurants as a vegan is harder than as a vegetarian.

I'm going with the first one because some people don't live where there's enough ag capacity, like Himalaya.

I picked option B.

- the methods of meat and dairy production stay the same, regardless of your choice.

As kmk pointed out, production methods couldn't stay the same - I'll choose to be a little more optimistic perhaps. If this ovo-lacto thing is a permanent change, then the world would eventually notice how hugely impractical current production methods would be, and thus they would have to change to more efficient and less animal-as-machine than they are now.

- if you choose the former, you will of course fall into the former category if you so desire.

An ovo-lacto veg is still not OBLIGED to consume eggs and dairy; merely ostensibly not outright opposed. Even if I started calling myself an ovo-lacto veg, I can't see myself eating vast quantities of cheese on toast and eggs benedict simply because I don't really like eggs and dairy. Also, there are probably more people allergic to dairy than to chicken - with option A, it's possible that everyone with a lactose intolerance still eats chicken for every meal. With B, that's not going to happen.

I think the first one would be the most beneficial to the animals. The only animals that I can see maybe having a better time in the second scenario is pigs... hmmm..

Pigs, and most marine animals, and game animals. Turkeys, geese, horses, pigeons... Cows and chickens still have it kinda rough, though. :/

i chose the second choice... i think once people were ovo-lacto they would be easier to persuade! lol

edit: oh snap! then everyone would have to remain ovo-lacto forever? no thanx if so, first choice would be better... good question!

good point! IMO i don't have a problem with people who eat meat in countries where they don't have an option and they are basically starving... we are so fortunate to have so many choices that eating animal products is cruel because it is not necessary for survival!

I agree.
I'm of the general opinion that animals are not here to serve humans; that We haven't any more right to kill them for food as they have to kill Us. But using animals for food is necessary in some places... it just isn't for me, and most of the industrialized world, really. :)

Having chosen the second option, I do acknowledge the validity of this point. I was being too narrow in my focus by only really considering those in similar situation to mine.

The benefit to the second option is that we wouldn't be killing the animals, so the consumption of animal by-products would be eliminated.

First. Then the vegan half could educate the omni half even after my powers are over and up their percentage :p
