How is Obama doing?

My dad hate's Obama. He is convinced that he is going to lower the standard of living for future generations, such as his younger children, and my son and going to make the economy worse before it gets better.
My dad is also facing his business failing after it has been very prosperous for the past 8 years due to higher taxes and the horrible economy, he is loosing his customers.
I am not so crazy either as I think he is spending way too much money and my son and other children of today are the ones who are going to have to pay for it, and I am really worried about that.
What is your opinion?
What is wrong with the USA being a "Christian Country". It is isn't it? Since the majortity of the people who live here are christian?
By that logic, we are also a "white country." We are a country where the majority of people identify as Christian or white - I think there is a big difference between that and our country being a "Christian country" or a "white country". Our constitution is a secular document.
I am not even a very religious person and the whole eliminationg "In God we trust" and cancelling day of prayer and all that stuff just really ticks me off! What is wrong with the USA being a "Christian Country". It is isn't it? Since the majortity of the people who live here are christian? And he designated a day of muslim prayer when he took away the day of Christian prayer? :o
How fair is that?
wow, I think our president needs his mama to turn him over her knee for the things he is doing. What a jerk! Not wanting to offend anyone my arse. What about the Christians? Isn't he offending them?
Oh, please. That post was fearmongering bullshit. Separate politics from religion already and let's be done with it.

Actually, we would be a "black country" by that logic wouldn't we? I heard that African Americans now outnumber white americans. (Latinos, and Mexican Americans wouldn't be considered "white" in this case btw)

The USA is about 65% white, I believe. I don't know where the crap you get your information but you need to find more reputable sources.
Y'all probably know where I stand on this issue, and to avoid being flamed by hippie liberals I'll keep my trap shut.

jakexvx, you seem to have my same mentality. I read some of your other posts on other threads and I keep wanting to quote and say "my thoughts exactly!".
For me though, I am finding that I really am not liked at all by Catski, so I guess she is the only one ever "flaming" me!
I really have nothing against you, SnowQueen, and I apologise for being brusque, which I know I often am. However, my academic life revolves around research and something which is drummed into us over and over again is to cite our sources and use verifiable facts or respected positions to prove our points.
I know that race and religion are really contentious issues in the US, so to hear someone like yourself who I believe to be a decent person casually say that they think there are more African Americans than white and Latino people in your country is not only wildly and obviously inaccurate, it's really troubling. We have enough overtly racist groups and individuals flying around without letting them gain ground by spreading rumours for them. Whenever you find yourself about to paraphrase something like that please do check, especially in the debate forum. I'll try to be a little less obsessive about my source-checking, though. Sometimes I forget that not everybody spends their nights panicking that they just handed in work with improper references ;D
1. Democrats in general are failing to provide strong leadership in Congress, which makes Obama appear weaker.
2. Obama's bi-partisanship approach isn't helping anything.
3. Health care reform is going to be a gradual thing. We're not going to get a huge overhaul. Realistically, all we were ever going to get were a few minor changes. With the tone of Congress now, I should add - minor changes, if even that.
4. If you study recessions, not spending money during a recession puts the economy into a tail spin. Without the spending, we'd have a deeper tailspin and a longer recovery.
5. I don't think the country would be better off with McCain & Palin.
6. It's all about what each person is specifically interested in. Repealing "don't ask, don't tell" is as important to me as health care, so if Obama can remove that and make a few improvements to health care, I'll be happy.
7. It's nice that our image is improving internationally.
8. Small business owners like to blame everyone and everything for their lack of success when it's more likely the way they've structured their products and/or services, ignoring that businesses fail and especially so in a poor economy. I'm absolutely sick of the whining.
I don't plan to vote for a Democrat again. Even if they're in office, they don't get anything done. But my opinion is based on Congress' performance, not Obama's.
Exactly. McCain choosing Palin as his running mate pretty much ensured that he would not be receiving my vote. So while I believe we are far better off now than we would be had McCain won, I cannot help but feel disappointed. Mainly regarding the clusterfuck that was the bailout. The same criminals who were profiting off of bets hedged against people losing their houses are the same people who are shaping policy. Same with the food industry. Where is the fucking regulation? Who needs (or deserves) a multimillion dollar salary each year? I try not to think about it too much, because it stresses me out and pisses me off and there is little I can do to change...anything. Sometimes Often I wonder if having power and having a conscience are mutually exclusive.

Hey, thanks Catski, that was sweet. Anyway, it wasn't something I really checked up on, I admit, it was just something I heard one time. Then again, now that I think aobut it, I think what I heard was that by the year 2015 or something like that, blacks will outnumber whites, but again, I am not sure of that, I just heard that somewhere but I can't remember where now. No, I dont' do a whole lot of fact checking...unless it involves nutrition, health, or Star Trek!
AlicePleasance: what is wrong is Palin? I was in Alaska about 4 years back when she ran and became governor of Alaska. I watched the debates and voted for her, I really liked her, I thought she was a very "go for it" kind of gal which was what I liked about her. She didn't seem like someone to mess around.

She's painfully ignorant. This is my main problem with her. There's a lot of people with whom her populism reverberates but that's mostly because she denounces "elitism", which if you listen closely she defines as smart people in Washington who think they know best. She's essentially promoting her own inexperience and poor understanding of the bigger picture as a viable alternative to, you know, intelligence and facts.
She also believes that America should go back to its roots and be a Christian country which is a) actually not anywhere in your beloved Constitution and b) really shitty for anyone who isn't Christian. She's made dark allusions to supporting profiling, she doesn't believe gay marriage is acceptable and she wants to ban safe, legal abortion. Needless to say she doesn't think much of making affordable healthcare available either which is no big deal for her - although she HAS admitted that she's sloped over the border to Canada to make use of their medical facilities - but it's a rough deal for anyone hovering around the poverty line.
It kills me. There are twenty-somethings in my politics classes who have better judgement and more understanding than she does. She is completely incapable of understanding that her experiences and privileges are not shared by everyone.

Epic video fail above.
It is very difficult to determine the exact dempgraphics on religon. Its against the law to ask it on the census to protect freedom of religon. Most of the info comes from religous organizations self-reporting. Still, the available data on religon should be fairly accurate. Source: geography lectures and textbooks.
Not taking a side. I just wanted to point something out.

Catski pretty much summed up every reason I wouldn't vote for a ticket with Palin listed on it. She stands for everything I am against (Palin, not Catski).
-I refuse to support someone that ignorant to make complex decisions that would directly affect the safety of my brother and our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
-I refuse to support someone who doesn't acknowledge the GLBT community as equal citizens (trust, I'm not entirely pleased with Obama on this issue, either).
-I refuse to support someone who doesn't support women. She is a woman. She is not for women.
-"Drill, baby, drill". Ugh.
Ugh. Ugh. UGH.
ETA: I believe she, like the Republican party, doesn't mess around. I admire (not the right word) the fact that she has strong convictions and she sticks by them. That is also, precisely the reason I didn't vote for her, and am hesitant to vote for any Republican. Unlike the Dems, they get shit done. Unfortunately, it's mostly shit I don't agree with.
Catski--- I read Jezebel, too. Do you post or just lurk? I'm an avid lurker, myself.
AlicePleasance, I am the opposite. I don't admire a politician with that much convictions. The best politicians are those that understand they don't have all the answers and are willing to listen to others.
BTW, Palin left a real mess in Alaska. She only temporally brought jobs when she said yes to unlimited drilling, fishing and logging. Now that the drilling is polluting the main escuaries and the logging is leading to massive run-off, they are all fighing among themselves. The jobs and resources will soon run-out. To me, that is a bad leader that has no idea how to properly run a state let alone a country.

I lurk hard but I have been known to drop the occasional comment. I'm not cool enough to be a regular commenter, though.

Yeah sometimes i feel like Im gonna get flamed on here but it's cool. Im just not really into the whole "to each his own" mentality and "love and respect everyone" kinda thing. The way I was raised you have to earn respect, its not just given. I wouldnt say I am conservative or anything though. Personally Im prolife (I would never want MY partner to get an abortion) and really against any type of substance use, but those are my only "conservative" values. That being said I would never vote for Palin or McCain. Also i think it is funny how people squabble over republican or democrat/liberal or conservative; because when it comes down to most of the issues they really are not that different.
Catski is cool though. She just likes to have her facts completely straight before she opens her mouth, which i like. She is also a fellow hardcore/metal/punk fan.
Personally Im prolife (I would never want MY partner to get an abortion)
I hate to quibble and threadjack and all, but that rubs me up the wrong way so badly. Her body, her choice - and just to tie it into the thread, that's a concept Palin has trouble with :D
Jakexvx, you're not totally alone on your positions. I was raised in a religous family and still am religous. That's right I admit it! No, comments please. Personally, I would never have an abortion. I still want to get marriaged and have children. Substance use is a never for me. I don't even drink alcohol or smoke. However, I believe in social programs and regulating industries. I am also very pro-environment and animal rights. This makes me somewhere in the middle or all over the place. Not quite sure.
As for others, I know everyone has there own opnions. I apreciate this and would want it no other way. It is better that people really think about issues and choose their political positions based on this. Some of my closet friends are both very conservative and very liberal. When people vote just along party lines or whatever their family, spouses does and so on, this really gets to me. It is whorefully ignorant. They don't seem to realize that how they vote really does effect their lives.
P.S. I realized long ago that this probably why I am not married. There are so many women I know that completely change their own political positions or even their beliefs just to 'keep the peace' with their husband. Could never be like that. He can have his opinion. I can have mine. We can agree to disagree and that is fine. This goes for everyone else, too.
The way I was raised you have to earn respect, its not just given.
I don't really understand what you mean by this. Respect in what sense?
As for the whole Republican vs. Democrat argument, it's totally stupid. Neither party represents significant change. Both parties have ethically bankrupt members. But since it will take divine intervention for a third party candidate to ever be elected to Presidency, it becomes a choice between the lesser to two evils.
I'm not cool enough either, Catski. I've posted a comment or two before, which then gets banished to limbo, where it rots for all eternity unnoticed. Though, I really wonder what some of those starred commenters do for a living. All they seem to do is live on jezebel. hmmm....

Totally agree. And let me stress again I dont think abortion should be illegal. Im just staying personally I would want my partner and I to try to find an alternative to abortion because I really feel like I couldn't live with something like that on my conscious. I am not religious at all, but I think sex is an act of commitment and love (even though our society pushes the idea that it is ok to make it a one time deal or something selfish.) That being said, I think it is horrible that someone can take the creation of life out of passion and then go and have an abortion. I dont think it is wrong for everyone, I just dont think it is right for me and the type of girl i would want to be with.
But yeah I just wanted to clear that up so people dont get the wrong idea. I will stop hijacking this thread now.
On Obama, he inherited a shitload of problems that he really cant be blamed for. Im deff not gonna get down and praise him as a savior as some people want to do though. We should all remember he is pro NAFTA, pro World bank and IMF, Pro Israel (in a way), he supports "safe" nuclear energy and "clean" coal, pro tort reform, he voted to renew the patriot act and to fund the two wars he supposedly doesn't support. Also not big into the whole bailout idea even though I understand why it was kinda necessary.
just sayin'
