any thoughts?
does anyone have information on soy that comes from a reputable medical journal or news source?
Oh, here, this is interesting:

Yes, it is. Thank you, IST.

Yeah, I just sort of skipped down to the end and looked at the conclusions, where they said (or it seems like this to me) that most of their research isn't worth anything because of their methods.
For IST, study that examines long term effects of eating soy (though it isn't specifically on vegetarians) is the third link down that I posted earlier. It's a journal article about a study done on Japanese -American men categorized by how often they consumed tofu. They were then looked at late in their lives and tested for cognitive function and brain size. Those who ate tofu on a regular basis (and we're assuming this is a life-long thing, since the study was started back in the 1960's) had "older" brains than they should for their age. The differences weren't huge, but statistically significant.
The more I read about soy, the more I just want to shout from the mountaintops: It is just a bean. It is not Elvis, or Jesus, or radioactive spiders, or arsenic on toast. It is a boring little bean which happens to be useful for a wide variety of applications. If we spent half as much time scrutinizing - I don't know, fava beans - I'm sure there'd be as much crazy flailing and bad science for them.
But I don't think soy protein isolates or hydrolyzed proteins are the same kind of beast - I mean, there's a world of difference between grilled corn-on-the-cob and high fructose corn syrup; there's no comparison between raw sunflower seeds and hydrogenated vegetable oil - I don't see why the fact that a denatured and highly-processed 'food product' should be used as evidence to vilify the entire plant.

Very well said! I totally agree.
It seems that you are all trying to back Childofzion into a corner, when all he is doing is trying to help you!
I am living proof that unfermented soya products are VERY bad for you.
I don't normally go around telling people about the problems I had (apart from those who had similar symptoms), but as this is a very important issue, I will. If Childofzion's information makes even one of you stop and really listen to his message, then it will have been worhtwhile.
What possible reason would he have to make it up? Why do people dig their heels in when faced with things of this nature? You should be patting him on the back, not giving him grief!
OK: I am 52 years old, vegetarian since I was 15 and Vegan for around 12 years. Six years ago, I started to use lots of soya products - ice cream, cheese, mince etc. About a year later, I started to have awful breast pains and VERY heavy periods. When I say heavy I mean bleeding for 10 weeks or more, so heavy that I dare not leave the house. I was losing clots as big as my hand and almost unbearable cramps.
Sorry if this is repulsive to some of you, but I feel that this is so important that it has to be told!
The doctors tested me for many things, and finally decided that as they couldn't find a reason or a cure, the only answer was a hysterectomy.
This wasn't acceptable to me, and after much deliberation, an endometrial ablation was performed instead (the lining of my uterus was lasered away).
It seemed to work for 2 months, and then I started to bleed with a vengeance again!
I started to do my own research and this was when I started to notice soy being mentioned in cases like mine.
I cut out all soy from my diet, religiously reading labels for soy additives in everything (used to that anyway, being Vegan).
Withing three weeks I stopped bleeding. I went six months - still no signs. No breast pain, no swellings, nothing.
I decided to do a little experiment, and intended to eat soya foods for one week. By the fourth day I was bleeding again!
I have never touched soya since, and to this day have had no further problems.
I have since passed this information on to four other ladies who were going through a similar hell.
ALL recovered after stopping soya.
Too many to be a coincidence. Too many for them all to be just sensitive to it.
I hope that any of you out there reading this who have similar problems will just try giving it up and see for yourselves what happens. If you do, please post your results on here.
I have nothing to gain from making this up. My story can be verified. I used to think that soya was amazing, but now I know different.
I truly hope this helps someone, and takes the heat off Childofzion - he is a star for standing by what he said even though everyone was on his back.

Oh, for crying out loud. I don't believe anyone was "digging their heels in." I am skeptical of outlandish, exaggerated claims, and all anyone ever asked for was evidence of what Zion was claiming. Not even "proof"; just an article, film, book, ANYTHING that supported what we was saying so we could make our own conclusions based on that. Personally, I appreciate scientific studies & not only anecdotal evidence.
Many of us here understand that too much soy can cause health problems. Magicvegan - You yourself state that you started using "lots" of soy products. LOTS is the problem. Too much of anything is bad for us, not just soy, which is why this villainization of soy is so irritating.
I'm glad that you were able to get your health problems under control with such an easy solution. But that doesn't mean that soy milk in our morning coffee or a tofu scramble on the weekends is going to make us deathly ill.
i have had a very bad reaction to soy after incorporating it so much into my diet though nothing like u... i think everyone has different reactions but i do notice on "the what u ate today" and "what ur kids ate" threads many people eat tons of soy products... too much of anything is not good and i enjoy hearing both sides of the argument... i am also wanting to cut it out completely since i am having a bad reaction to it but it is hard since it seems to creep into just about anything not made from scratch.
Magicvegan - apologies if I've come across as harsh... that was not my intention.
I sympathize with the difficulties consumption of soya products caused you, but one individual, or even a group of people who experience problems caused/exacerbated by soya does not mean that soya is a dangerous plant or toxic. It annoys me how anecdotal evidence is held up as the gold standard, while studies continue to show that for the vast majority of people, unadulterated (not denatured/heavily and artificially processed) soya is safe and, in moderate amounts, healthy.
That there are people in this world who are allergic to nuts does not mean nuts are toxic. That coeliac disorder exists in a fairly significant portion of the population does not mean wheat and barley are dangerous. Drawing a slightly more controversial parallel, those who have bad experiences with cannabis aren't in the same boat as those who use it for pain management.
Just something I wanted to throw into the mix.. I was part of the pet trade a long time ago and now I have a really strong "dislike" (sounds better than the word hatred) for the pet industry, and have been involved in adoption programs for unwanted exotic animals, and now mostly parrots. It has been reported by breeders of birds (some that I personally knew) that parrots in particular have a lower incidence of fertile eggs when fed parrot food that contains raw unprocessed soybeans. These are people that I can assure you had no conspiracy intention like some in the food industry might have (and often do). I never give anything with any kind of soy to our parrots, even though I have absolutely no intention of breading them, and would never even consider adopting a pair of the same bread. I know... a parrot isn't a human, but still I really try to limit my intake of soy, even though I love it, and have no intention of breading myself!

Their parrots! Not humans!
What happens to a cat when a cat eats a vegan diet...the go blind and die...does that mean humans can't eat a vegan diet? No we arn't cats. Same with parrots.
I don't believe any study done on animals, they react completely different to things than humans do becuase their whole biology is different than ours, and PARROTS arn't even mammals, for cryin out loud.
This blog is pretty funny if you read through it all. I think people get offended because they don't want to change. Personally I don't care what study comes out, I love tofu, and I am going to eat tofu. I have had no problems with tofu so why should I give it up?
