Black Hole of Random Rants (With Hugs Attached)

Well, this sure turned into a clusterfuck.

Ms. corinnas54,

What I meant by "republicans", I meant the extremists who have hijacked the party to push across radical ideology-based laws that strip away rights from citizens. I made a generalization about all republicans and I shouldn't have. I misspoke and I apologize. And yes, there are extremists on the other side too.

That said, generalizations shouldn't be made about all women who use welfare either. Not all who use welfare use it for drugs and alcohol. As a kid, it was my sister, my mom and me. We used welfare and child support until my mom got herself on her feet. President Clinton then passed welfare reform and she got a job teaching men and women how to make résumés, interview for jobs, etc.

The other day, I read an article about women suffering because they got pregnant at a time when things were secure and now the economy has left them stranded with no jobs. They can only collect welfare for a certain amount of time while they struggle to feed themselves and their family.

I agree with you that some people lack personal responsibilty and/or accountability. A lot of people (but not all) lack these traits. But I don't believe in looking for a single answer to solve all the problems. We should be smarter about solving our problems.

Doing drugs while pregnant should be illegal...but these girls/women don't give a crap, they will just have a baby with possible physical and mental retardation due to drug and or alcohol abuse and then let me the taxpayer pay all the medical bills while they spend their welfare check on drugs (and they will end up on welfare if they are so addicted to drugs they can't stop for a pregnancy, then they certainly won't be able to hold a job, and now that they have a baby they qualify for free money...yay!)

98% of Florida welfare applicants pass their drug test.

I went to college with single mothers on welfare.  It wasn't a bon bon eating glamorous life, or whatever comfy picture you've painted for yourself.  It was going to school full time, working 30 hours a week to qualify for welfare, and never being able to afford to turn the heat up enough to actually be warm.  On top of that, they had to find time to study and parent.  The system supported them for a few years, sure, but they'll be giving back to the system for the rest of their employed life.

P.S.  It's probably not a good idea to be offended by a generality and then commit the remainder of the post to an offensive generality.

For my final 2-1/2 years of college I didn't have health insurance and used state-level welfare to fund a needed neck surgery.  Apparently, I was likely a drug-addled whore who abused the system for my medical procedure.  I spent so much time memorizing chemistry models and bird species that I didn't have time to have drug-addled whore fun.  I really feel like the system owes me.  *grumbles* Even the system didn't screw me.  What a gyp. *grumble*

In 12 years of single parenthood, I got food stamps for about 6 months... got kicked off 'cause I wouldn't quit my graduate-level educational program to take a job at the 'Circle-K' (or whatever minimum-wage job they 'found' me)... I guess that makes me a welfare whore too, right?! cool. Side note: in AR-- and I know this b/c I researched it, after defending myself against such (pardon my bluntness) ignorant assumptions from the uninformed-- the vast majority of welfare recipients are white, have 1-2 children, and receive state services for less than 3 years. Just in case reality becomes a relevant factor, in setting parameters for blanket generalizations about groups of poor women...

(don't worry: I won't hold my breath.)

Good timing:  http://news.yahoo.com/why-drug-testing-poor-could-unconstitutional-081205581.html

Several studies, including a 1996 report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, have found that there is no significant difference in the rate of illegal-drug use by welfare applicants and other people. Another study found that 70% of illegal-drug users between the age of 18 and 49 are employed full time.
...
Given that cost-benefit reality, it is hard to escape the suspicion that what is really behind the drive to drug-test benefits applicants is a desire to stigmatize the needy. The fact is, there are all sorts of people who benefit from government programs. Businessmen get state contracts, farmers receive crop subsidies...

In answer to all those who accused me of attacking ALL people on welfare, I don't believe I did that or called everyone or anyone a whore. I was speaking of the case at hand of a girl who killed her baby because she was a drug addict, I was saying that if she was too addicted to drugs to quit for her baby (and if that baby had lived), then it wasn't likely that she would quit for a job and therefore would  most likely end up on welfare now that she qualified, and I do have a problem with that. I in no way feel like all recipients of public aid are drug addicted whores, but as long as we are talking about it, I will say that along with those who really need and deserve it, are MANY who abuse it. But I don't believe I was making generalizations about everyone. I was speaking of drug addicts who get pregnant and care more about drugs than about their babies...I will cop to making generalizations about them.

"the vast majority of welfare recipients are white, have 1-2 children, and receive state services for less than 3 years"
If this was aimed at me, I don't believe I made any comment about race.

In conclusion, I in no way accused any of you of being a drug addled whore or taking advantage of the system. I also did not say poor women were all drug addicts or whores, and in general never said everybody on welfare was a drug addict.

Josh,
I appreciate your response. I apoligize as well if I seemed to be generalizing people on welfare, that wasn't my intention. I have all the respect in the world for anyone who struggles to take care of their family and just needs a little help.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but since you are checking in on this thread, corinnas54, I like your new profile pic.

:) Understood. I took no offense. I just wanted to share my story with you, with the hopes of finding some common ground between us. I acknowledge and agree with some things you said. I acknowledge and disagree with some things as well. It doesn't mean I can't listen to you, hear your side and see if we can work together.

I sometimes think I'm not cut-out for the Food Fight thread because I try to work with people instead of pushing against them. Ha! Anyhow, welcome to VegWeb! Congrats on the baby! :)

Josh,

I sometimes feel like I am not cut out for the food fight thread as well, though for different reasons.

1. What I write never comes out the way I mean it
2. I am always the odd man out...I mean who ever heard of a Conservative, Baptist Republican Vegan? lol

But that is why I love Vegweb, even when I disagree with everyone (and put my foot in my mouth) there all always people willing to listen and try to understand.
