Odd breastmilk question (sort of vegan related)
Ok, please don't think I'm a complete weirdo. But, my partner and I have been discussing when the best time for us to have a baby would be. The topic of breastmilk came up, and all of a sudden we had this brilliant (bizarre?) idea.
I plan on breastfeeding for at least one year definitely. And then up to age 2 if the child needs/wants it. I'm vegan. My partner eats meat, but absolutely no dairy or eggs or other animal by-products.
Would it be weird of me to make things with breastmilk? Like ice cream? Or use it in baking in place of soy milk? I don't even know if it would work. But, we both miss "real" ice cream.
Then, as an aside, I thought to myself, can I still say I'm vegan if I try this? Technically, it IS dairy. But, obviously, ethically and voluntarily given. :D
Here's another weird (but serious) question - as a vegan, would you eat breastmilk ice cream? I know it sounds funny. But, I know there are milk donors for babies. So, I thought, what if you went to someone's house, is it something that you'd try? Or would it be too weird?
Has anyone here thought of trying this?
Should I just go re-register, now, under a new name to escape humiliation? ;)
Human breast milk does NOT qualify as "dairy." Unless you are a cow. Which you aren't, even if your boss or your MIL calls you one. ;)

i don't think she is alone. i am sure it has been done. human breastmilk has a very different composition than regular milk, though. very high in fat and i think it might be very sweet? i would say look up the proportions of macronutrients (which, btw, change over time IN ADDITION to changing during a feeding) and see how it compares.
I have used my breast milk for my coffee when I was out of soy. It was just on one or two occasions. It worked fine. The milk was a little sweet, but I like my coffee very sweet anyway. I don't make tons of milk, so I guess I've never really had the opportunity to make something with my milk. But if I did, I would probably make icecream or something out of it just for kicks and giggles. ;D
You're still vegan if you consume your own (or partner's, whatev) breastmilk. No animal was harmed, and there was consent.
As for dinner at the home of a person who cooked with breastmilk... I wouldn't want to try someone else's breastmilk. Like how I find milk from a cow repulsive. But, that's a personal thing. I'm sure there are some people who wouldn't mind one bit.
And, really, I don't think you're weird. Just... thoughtful, really.
I think breast milk ice cream might be a cool idea for you and your baby. I don't think that would be weird. I wouldn't be interested in any though... What a funny idea!
I have had this same discussion with people who say how disgusting it is, but how can they say that when they are drinking milk from a cow? Still vegan, since its from the same species. I think I would probably only eat my own, not someone elses.....but I bet I could convince my husband to try it! I had a TON of milk last time 'round. I could have made gallons of little2ant-milk icecream!!!

Wow! After reading this post, I started to wonder if other people had thought about this as well and they have! First of all, when I search in google for "cooking with breast milk" and "breast milk recipes" a drop menu pops up indicating that lots of other people have searched for these same terms! And, I found a few articles on the topic too. In the one below, a mom finds frozen breast milk in the back of her freezer that she had forgotten about. She decides to make a sour dough starter with it and uses that to make waffles for the whole family! A totally vegan recipe for the sour dough starter is included! Wow!

Breast milk is Vegan. It is also very sweet. As for ice cream, hmm, maybe I ought to give that a try... I just don't feel like pumping it out... I personally wouldn't bake with it, not sure how the nutrients are retained and it's not like it'd be tasted anyway. However, breast milk Ice Cream would probably be tasty. I'd only drink my own, though.
I suppose, thinking about it, I'd probably only try my own too. Although, I don't know. If, for some reason, I couldn't breastfeed, I'd attempt getting donor or purchased breastmilk for my child. I might try some of that, lol.

i wonder if you would have to put a lot of sugar in the icecream? i have no real experiance with breast milk...
(and my comment earlier was i wouldn't eat someone else's breastmilk icecream. milk is for baby cows, breastmilk is for the baby human and perhaps the "maker"). but, as TK notes, i have no issue with other body fluids. interesting. maybe if the word "milk" wasn't in there... "milk" sketches me out when it comes from something that isn't grown from the earth.

I think I would try my own out of curiosity. You should really try the ice cream thing and report back!
On a different note, I've heard of people eating their placenta as a ceremonial thing after the baby is born--there are recipes online for placenta lasagna, pizza, etc. Apparently it's chock full of nutrients that are beneficial to the new mother's health (which I guess is why other mammals eat their placentas--for those who have seen cat or dog births, you know what I'm talking about). Now THAT, that I would NOT try. Not even considering whether or not it's vegan, it would be too 'meaty' for me to choke down. Compared to placenta, breast milk doesn't sound half bad ;)
So funny that you should mention the placenta, as I read about this as well. Oddly, my first thought was that I wanted to try it (sorry, if this is too much information). :-[
I always want to try the weird stuff. But, also, because I'm such a scientist ... I always want to experiment and see what works, what doesn't, etc. What better test subject than myself? ;)
I'll definitely report back about the ice cream. But, it might be a while as I'm not even pregnant.
it actually could work quite well. 50% of the calories in breastmilk come from fat, so it is more like a "cream" than say soy milk. I wouldn't bother with it though, but I am lazy, and have no kids.

it's thinner than regular or soy milk--not a great creamer IMO. And speaking from experience, while I think it is great that you are planning on breastfeeding since it is the best thing, it doesn't always go as swimmingly as LLL might lead one to believe, so I think you should just see how it is going for you.

I have to agree, it is sort of like "cannibalism lite", if you want to drink your own milk, that is your deal, but to be unknowingly served someone else's is just wrong, I could say the same thing about boogers :)

This whole thread is reminding me of the "Breast Milk" episode of Friends. OK, so I only ever saw Friends for the first time last year (where have i been, you say?). I'm sad.

Dont they say it takes about 50 gallons of cow's milk to make one pint of Ben and Jerry's or something like that? I might be exaggerating, but I know one pint of milk does NOT equal one pint of icecream. It just might not be practical to make breast milk icecream.....you'd need so much to make so little.
I was heating up soy milk on the stove today to make hot chocolate and I tasted it and it reminded me of breasmilk.....not that I drank it, but I used to have to test it for temperature when I was heating up bottles.
