Orange Chicken Style Tofu
3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 pound extra firm tofu, drained and pressed, chopped into bite sized pieces
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 green onions, chopped
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
hot cooked rice, to serve
1. Saute tofu in 2 tablespoons oil until browned. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, saute garlic and green onions in remaining 1 tablespoon oil until garlic is golden.
2. Add water, orange juice, lemon juice, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium.
3. In a small cup or dish, mix together cornstarch and water until thoroughly blended. Pour cornstarch mixture into sauce, stirring constantly.
4. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until sauce thickens to your liking. Remove from heat and combine with tofu until completely coated. Serve over rice.
Use more or less cornstarch mixture depending on how thick you like your sauce. You can also add ginger if you like that flavor. Or orange peel or orange juice concentrate for more orange flavor. Enjoy!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
I made this for my bf. He raved about it. I doubled the orange juice, left out the red pepper and also served with broccoli. I added cashews and seasame seeds and agave. This will definitely be made again. I love the idea of making spring rolls as someone suggested as well. Five stars!
Please help! I don't use/ have brown sugar but I have agave and maple syrup. What can I use. Looks super yummy!
I used maple syrup and it was delicious!

This is great and definitely will become your new favourite. The sauce recipe is a great starting point and I definitely added more orange juice and chili pepper flakes to my liking, and recommend doubling the sauce to everyone!!i also threw in some carrots and greens so i didn't feel guilty about not having any veggies.
I've tried this with tofu as well as Yves Veggie Chicken Tenders and they were both great, and i especially love the latter since it's got tons of B12 in it.
This is also really good with seitan - I introduced my family to seitan with this recipe. I used real orange juice this time and it was extra delicious. I also agree with the posters above who think this recipe is even better than the General Tao's.
this was so delicious. i didnt want to stop eating it! made some changes.. doubled the sauce like others suggested, except i added 2 tbsp of orange juice concentrate but i think it couldve even used a bit more. i used a quarter of a yellow onion in place of the green onion and also added portobella mushrooms, a small yellow pepper, and a can of baby corn (cus baby corn is one of my favorite things about asian food). i also steamed up some broccoli and served it on top of that. so good - i can't wait for my leftovers, i think i'll throw some cashews on top!
This was so tasty! I had a craving for Orange Chicken so I looked up recipes and came across this one! I followed the recipe exactly except I added orange zest. Next time I make it (which will be tomorrow for Thanksgiving), I'll double the sauce as I like extra on my rice.
I made this the other evening....it wasn't great but there's lots of potential.
I found it wasn't orangey enough, so next time I will not use the water and just use more orange juice instead.
I used chicken style seitan instead of tofu as that's all I had to hand. I also doubled the sauce, which I would definitely recommend.
Will try it again with the extra orange juice and maybe some orange zest as well.
This was incredibly good! I was out of lemon juice so I used two tablespoons of orange juice and a dash of dried lemon peel. I also accidentally doubled the red pepper flakes to a whole teaspoon. (My red pepper flakes may be old and losing their flavor because it wasn't extra hot like I expected it to be.) I'm going to have to make this more often! I loved it! ;D
It looks very good! I tried to make it.
::) I burnt it.
