Orange Chicken Style Tofu
3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 pound extra firm tofu, drained and pressed, chopped into bite sized pieces
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 green onions, chopped
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
hot cooked rice, to serve
1. Saute tofu in 2 tablespoons oil until browned. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, saute garlic and green onions in remaining 1 tablespoon oil until garlic is golden.
2. Add water, orange juice, lemon juice, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium.
3. In a small cup or dish, mix together cornstarch and water until thoroughly blended. Pour cornstarch mixture into sauce, stirring constantly.
4. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until sauce thickens to your liking. Remove from heat and combine with tofu until completely coated. Serve over rice.
Use more or less cornstarch mixture depending on how thick you like your sauce. You can also add ginger if you like that flavor. Or orange peel or orange juice concentrate for more orange flavor. Enjoy!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
Ok!
I doubled the recipe and added a few T of rum, zuchinni, carrots, and a bunch of fat udon noodles, some more soy sauce and some sweet sauce to liven it up a bit.
I served this with sweet & spicy thai fried rice and vegetable tempura birdsnests. :D
Yum-O!
BTW, I've tried this and the General Tso's recipe on vegweb and even though that one is great, I liked this one better. ;)
Ditto! I dream about this recipe... And crave it all the time! :D Yum!
This was wonderful! Better than I remember the real thing tasting.
I was out of cornstarch/arrowroot so I just cooked it down for 20 minutes and it thickened up perfectly.
I also went heavy on the citrus.
I'm going to try this again over a chopped up breaded vegan chicken patty.

Thanks for a great recipe!
Here's my dark dark dark secret: I don't really like tofu! I know I know...I'm such a poor vegeterian! But the truth is...I just look at the white, insipid brick...and I don't know what to do with it...Often, it just sits in the fridge until the mold becomes unbearable!
But(because there is a but!), tonight, I tried this recipe and...Geeeezz! Is this ever good! Thanks God for GOOD tofu, not just bearable...GOOD... Delicious...TOFULIOUS! It is officially my favorite dish!
Thank you thank you thank you!
I added more orange juice before I added the cornstrach because it looked and smelled as if there was too much soy sauce...furthermore, i didn't have pepper flakes...so I added a bit of Tobasco(hot sauce) instead! Oh...and I didn't have green onions, only white ones...it did the trick!
I'll definatly will do this again!
This was *very* good! I added a little ginger, some toasted sesame seeds, and cut down a little on the sugar, but otherwise followed the recipe. It completely filled my craving and didn't make me feel too guilty for eating it. I served it over broccoli. Very quick and easy to make as well. Thanks!
Call me stupid but was the 1/4 cup of water for the recipe or the cornstarch? I used the 1/4 cup for the cornstarch and the tablespoons for the sauce. I thought this was really yummy. However, I doubled the sauce, (except the sugar), but thought the vinegar was a touch too strong. Maybe the double sugar would have balanced the double vinegar. I think next time I'll try keeping the recipe as is and not double it. Thanks for the recipe!!!
P.S. Next time, I'll definitely (at least!) double the sauce so there is much more to pour down over rice--which I will include the next time I make this! ;) Yum!
Oh, yum! :D This recipe was really good. I even screwed up & mixed the sauce together using 1 whole cup of water, not just 1/4 cup. But before I added this to the onion/garlic mixture, I realized my mistake & dumped some water out... :-\ Then I had to add more vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, etc. to make it flavorful again. ;D Anyway, my point in typing all of this dumbness out is to say that even with this big mistake, it was delicious!
I did cut back on the oil & sugar, and I used frozen/thawed tofu (for the first time!) & it was incredible! I totally loved the texture of the tofu this way! I also added in some steamed broccoli instead of using rice, since I was too impatient to wait for rice to cook... :P I'll definitely be making this recipe again!
I thought this recipe was delicious. i added green pepper to the onion in the sauce and i think next time i will put the tofu over broccoli and rice. i also doubled the sauce and i am glad because it was good to have extra for the rice.
Fantastic. Omnivorous family devoured it and asked for it again. Per others' suggestion, I used the juice and zest of a whole orange and omitted the water (except for the 2 Tbsp that goes with the cornstarch), and used asparagus to get my kid to eat something green. It worked! Thanks for a great recipe.
