Home-Style Apple Crumble

What you need:

6 baking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced very thinly
2 cups brown sugar, divided
1 cup oats (any kind)
1 1/2 cups white flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2-2/3 cups vegan margarine

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix apples with approximately 1 cup brown sugar, coating the apples, and spread mixture evenly in the bottom of a 10x13" cake pan.
2. In a bowl, add oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir together well.
3. Gradually add margarine and crumble with fingers until a chunky but not overly crumbly texture is reached (mixture should stick together when pressed firmly).
4. Place oat topping over the apples, and press together lightly. Put in oven, and bake for about 45 minutes, or until top is golden and apples are soft and fully cooked.
Serve warm with vegan vanilla ice cream. You can make more of the oat mixture if you prefer a thicker topping. There are endless fruit combinations possible, like pears, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches...

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This is in the oven as I type this; I'll post the results later tonight!  I had to make a few...improvisations during the set up process.  I didn't read the intructions ahead of time and accidentally added the sugar mix(I used half brown sugar/half stevia in the raw) to the flour and oat thingy.  I also cut down half a cup of flour..it might have been an accident, but I was too lazy to take the flour back out    :-\    Also, I only had 6 small golden delicious apples available...and they were frozen.  I just roughly peeled them(about half the peel) and did a mix of slicing and chopping them as evenly as I could. And I ran out of Earth Balance(the mixture wasn't getting to a press-able consistency) so I added canola oil bit by bit until it was.  I sprinkled a bit of stevia with the cinnamon and the apples, and I topped the whole thing off with some dashes of apple pie spice.  I hope this works!  ;D

Very tasty.  The only thing we ran into was that even though the topping "stuck together when pressed firmly" it never really seemed to brown or cook, even after almost an hour, although the apples were wonderfully done.  We solved the problem by grating some additional shortening all over the top of the oat mixture and then putting it under the broiler for about 3-4 minutes.  It turned brown, and became a lot more cohesive.  We were able to cut squares and lift them out with a spatula, with no extra liquid and no crumbling.  Thanks for the recipe - I'm sure we'll make it again.  :-)

This recipe was amazing!!
Granted that I halved the recipe and then forgot that I halved it and added 1.5 cups of brown sugar instead of just 1, it was still really delicious!  (Just a tad sweet, but that is nothing to complain about!)
I highly recommend this recipe as it is really easy to make as well.
Happy cooking!

Holy Moly, we've almost eaten the whole thing and it came out of the oven five minutes ago.

I halved the recipe and cut back on the sugar by 1/4 cup.  1/2 cup of earth balance was more than enough even though I put an extra 1/4 cup oats in.  Delicious and such an easy dessert.

This turned out great! So easy and delicious, it does call for a lot of sugar. I will definitely make this again but I'm going to try and substitute agave for the sugar.

This was good, though the topping was a bit dry for my taste--very floury and not very crispy or chewy. I've actually been enjoying it more on days 2 and 3 than I did when it was fresh out of the oven since it's moistened up a bit. I added about 1/2 cup chopped fresh cranberries to the apple mixture which adds a nice tangy flavor and counteracts the sweetness of the apples. I've been having warm bowls of the crumble with vanilla "ice cream" on top. Yum!

This crumble was divine!
Incidentaly, I added honey-style liquid fruit sweetener to the apple to cut down on the sugar in the fruity part, and apple-blueberry oats to cut down on the sugar in the crumble. It was so  still so sweet and filling! Thanks for a great recipe!
