Home-Style Apple Crumble
6 baking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced very thinly
2 cups brown sugar, divided
1 cup oats (any kind)
1 1/2 cups white flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2-2/3 cups vegan margarine
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix apples with approximately 1 cup brown sugar, coating the apples, and spread mixture evenly in the bottom of a 10x13" cake pan.
2. In a bowl, add oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir together well.
3. Gradually add margarine and crumble with fingers until a chunky but not overly crumbly texture is reached (mixture should stick together when pressed firmly).
4. Place oat topping over the apples, and press together lightly. Put in oven, and bake for about 45 minutes, or until top is golden and apples are soft and fully cooked.
Serve warm with vegan vanilla ice cream. You can make more of the oat mixture if you prefer a thicker topping. There are endless fruit combinations possible, like pears, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches...

this was great!
the first time I made it i used brown sugar, and the second time i made it i just used regular white sugar.
the second one was way better!
I also find that doubling it gives you a thicker better crumble ( in my opinion ) :)
anyway all and all this recipe is fabulous!!!!

That seems like a lot of sugar???? Can I substitute maple syrup and if so, how much? Would love to made this for a book club meeting, but is it really necessary to put that much sugar? Thanks for all responses.
Very good!!!! I always find that whenever I make Apple Crumbles I end up with excess liquid at the bottom of the pan - anyone know how to fix that?? I usually just drain it! ;D
You can sprinkle some tapioca granuales on the fruit before you put the topping on, I do that w/ my blueberry cobbler, and it helps.

i did use regular apples though so it was a bit too sweet for my taste, but that was my mistake!
This was really good, although I needed to use a little more 'butter' and I used ordinary apples so I stewed them a little. Im making a pear version for dessert tonight!

You can mix a tablespoon or two of flour or cornstarch with the apple slices and brown sugar. This will absorb extra liquid and make the finished product hold together better.

This is a great recipe! All the ingredients were in the house already, so easy to make, and WAY more delicious than I expected!
