Haloua with Raisins

What you need:

1 1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegan butter (I use Earth Balance)
2 to 3 tablespoons orange blossom water
3/4 cup raisins
2/3 cup walnuts
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons orange blossom water
Powdered sugar, to garnish

What you do:

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2) In a food processor, place the raisins, nuts, cinnamon and orange blossom water. Blend till you get a nice paste. Set aside.
3) For the pastry, cut the flour with the vegan butter until mixture is crumbly. Add the orange blossom water to pull to dough together. Gently work into a smooth dough.
4) Make quarter size balls and flatten in the palm of your hand enough to place some mixture in the middle. Pull the dough over the mixture and crimp the dough together.
5) Place the cookies on a baking dish and bake for about 15 minutes. Allow to cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Enjoy!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Hey Cleo, that mini pie idea is great! I get tired making the cookies too sometimes. I wish it was like the old days when women and and all the people in a family sat around the kitchen helping each other. Things happen faster that way, plus it's nice to sit and talk to someone while doing something tedious like making this type of cookie.
By the way, they are great with dates too, and dates are easily mushed without machinery!

Quite good! I had to make some changes, as I did not have orange flower water and my blender just kicked the bucket. I subbed water mixed with orange extract and a little vanilla extract for the orange flower water, and obviously did not puree the filling. I also added coconut. They were a bit labor-intensive but really good. In the end, I got tired of filling cookies individually, and simply made a mini-pie with the dough and filling. It turned out so well, I will probably just do mini pies again next time. Thanks for the great recipe. ;)b
