Effortless Steelcut Oatmeal

What you need:

1 cup steel cut oats
4 cups water
dried fruit, to taste, optional

What you do:

1. Put the oats in the crock pot with water.
2. Add some dried fruit, if desired.
3. Let it cook overnight and you will have delicious oatmeal in the morning.
Much better than little packages of microwaved oatmeal.

Preparation Time:
1 minute
Cooking Time:
Servings:
2-4

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I tried the steel bowl method last night in my mini crock. 9 hrs later there was still water left and it was burnt around the rim where the oil didn't reach. Still it was deliciously warming with a little plant milk and buttery spread. As far as I know the crock is stuck on high setting. I had to halve the recipe to fit in the bowl, but ate double the servings, YUMMiLY !

This was so good, I love  :)>>> steelcut oatmeal but it takes so long to cook in the morning.  This was great to wake up to.  It took 3 hours to cook on low in the crock pot, I woke up and shut it off.  It stayed nice and warm until I woke up.  Thanks for sharing.

I am making this tonight for Saturday breakfast.  I doubled the recipe as I want to bring some to my mom.  I added, golden raisins, chopped dried apples, 2 cinnamon sticks, chopped walnuts and 2 tbsp ground flax seed.  I cant wait to eat this.  I think my mom is going to love it.  I will let you know how it comes out.

I do this - but in order to make it through to the morning, I put the steel cut oats & water into a greased bowl, and put the bowl into the crockpot.  Then I fill the crockpot up with water up to about where the steel cut oats start.  Cover and cook on low all night and they're perfect by morning with no burning.  :)

i NEVER wake up with enough time to make steel cut oatmeal, so this recipe was perfect!  however, i made it during the day because i wanted to make sure of the timing.  it took about 6 hours for all the water to be cooked in on my crockpot's medium setting.  also, i used 3 cups water, 1 cup soymilk, 1 cup oats.  The best part is that i put it in bowls in the fridge and microwave it with a little water each morning (it makes about 6 servings).  it definitely keeps well in the fridge, and is perfect for people like me who live alone and are NOT morning people!

ralst: Excellent timing! Thank you for your response; earlier today I was thinking about how I should retry this recipe tonight. I'm going to try adding 1/2 cup of a water and see how it turns out.

Thanks!

The size of the crock pot matters because of how much steam is caught and used for cooking. Try adding 1/2 C more water. I use a 2 quart crock pot for this recipe.
As for the sleeping in late, I would set an alarm to go off when you should turn off the oatmeal or have someone who wakes up earlier turn it off. Then go back to bed and when you wake up it will still be warm or you can re-heat.
We used to make a big batch every week and keep it in the fidge so we could have it every morning before work.  Steel cut oats and slow cook old fashioned oats not only taste better they are better for you nutritionally. They pack in more protein and whole grains.

Hmm. I tried this last night. I think I did something wrong, I started it at 11, intending to wake up around 7. But I woke up in the middle of the night (around 2) and it was REALLY DRY. So I turned it off because I was afraid it would burn. I added more water this morning and put it on high to cook faster. Maybe I just didn't add enough water. I'll retry this.

Does anyone know if the size of the crockpot matters? Mine is much bigger than this, and I have a lot of extra room. Will that be okay?

OK, finally had a chance to try this.  I use 1/2 soy milk and 1/2 water.  I must sleep longer than most (It was almost 10 hours-oops!) because my oatmeal had a "skin" burned onto the top and was burned to my crockpot.  The part that did not burn tasted great so I will try cooking for less time next time.

Does anyone know how to make a batch of steel cut oats and then freeze them to re-heat later?  Similar to the ones they sell at Trader Joe's.  I would love to make a whole bunch and just heat a portion each morning.
