Death by Apple Pie

What you need:

2/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups flour Filling:
6 apples, thinly sliced/diced (I use Granny Smith)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch salt Topping:
1/3 cup vegan margarine
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. For crust, cream the shortening with the salt. Add boiling water and mix. Add flour. Press crust into pie plate.
2. For filling, Fill crust with apples. In a bowl, mix together sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle on top of apples.
3. For topping, cream together flour, sugar, and margarine. Spoon mixture on top of pie.
4. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce to 350 degrees F and bake for another 30 minutes. Enjoy!
I like to bake this in a square casserole dish instead of a pie dish. If you want to use a premade crust, it works equally as well as the homemade one. However, the homemade crust is so easy to make, you may as well. I prefer to use granny smith apples for their tart, crisp taste. They're very good baking apples. For this recipe, I halve the sugar, using 1/4 brown sugar and 1/4 white for the filling and the topping. You may also add a smidge of cinnamon to the topping if you like.

Awesome recipe!!! Was so easy to make. This one will become one of my regulars!!

This is a great applie pie recipe! I made this for a vegan potluck and everyone enjoyed it very much! It was simple to make and very delicious. Thanks for posting this recipe!  ;)b

Oof this was delicious. Made for a potluck and everyone seemed to love it. Now I'm apple pie lady.  ;)

sooooo the only other pie I've ever made was a crustless pumpkin one aaaaaaaand I was cooking this for the whole family sooooo I was pretty concerned that it would end up awful . BUT IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!! so tasty, the brother went for seconds and I think he really wanted thirds... :)>>>

I used this as a starter for a honey apple pie made for a Rosh Hashanah dinner at a friends house. I've made the recipe as is and it was lovely, but this way was pretty amazing.

For the filling, I subbed 1/2 cup honey for the sugar and added 2 Tbsp flour, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, 1/4 cup melted vegan margarine.

For the topping, I subbed brown sugar and added 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp salt.

It was amazing and people couldn't keep their hands off it! The one leftover piece made a great breakfast too ;)

Fantastic recipe-- I skipped the crumble and doubled the pastry crust, so I can have a more "traditional" pie top!

If this is death.... kill me, please  ;)

A good recipe, but just too sugary for me. Next time I'll also let the apples sit for a bit so the some of the juice runs out so that when you bake it you don't have a pile of juice at the bottom of your pie.

This was my first time making an apple pie, so I ended up with a giant pool of liquid at the bottom of mine. :(

Other than that mistake made by myself, this recipe seems great. I intend to make it again, hopefully with better results. :P Oh! I also had way more apple than I needed. I cut up 5 Granny Smith and ended up with an excess of apple when it came time to fill my pie.

Love love love it!

what kinda apples or it doesnt matter??

i usually use granny smith (the green ones) in baking, esp. if the recipe calls for added sugar, as this one does.  Just avoid the overly sweet red ones, OR reduce the amount of sugar in the filling recipe and you'll be on your way to death by apple pie!  Enjoy!
