Chewy Breadmachine Bagels

What you need:

1 1/2 teaspoons of yeast
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
3/4 cup of very warm water

What you do:

Place ingredients in your bread machine. Select dough or manual cycle. When cycle is finished, remove the dough from the machine and roll into 6 snakes about a 10 inches long. Press the ends tightly together to form a doughnut shape. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Place bagels in the boiling water for 2 minutes. (The longer they boil the chewier they are.) Remove from the water and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until golden in color.
Try: half all-purpose and half whole wheat flour. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of raisins and an extra tablespoon of vegan sugar for Cinnamon Raisin Bagels

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I was pretty intimidated originally about making bagels, but this recipe made things so easy and straightforward!  I am thankful for the other comments about using a slotted spatula to put them in and get them out of the water, a great idea! Mine turned out really nice and chewy, not overly dense.  I used some of them to make pizza bagels for lunch and everyone said they were great.  :)

I always follow first time making a recipe without any changes, but totally forgot about changing for High Altitude (Im at about 3200 feet)! The rolled snake shape came apart in the water  :-D so next time I do the ball with a punched hole as another reviewer suggested.
Otherwise these are incredible!

THANK YOU!  :)>>>

Can you freeze these bagels?  I live alone, and, while I could eat a whole batch myself, I probably shouldn't.  ;)

Yes, they freeze very nicely. I do it all the time.

I used my bread machine for  first time to make these, and they were ok. Boiled each for 30 seconds per side only, finally cooled off after cooking so I toasted one and smothered it in butter and blueberry jam. Even with those I could still taste the yeast? or something weird, and it was definitly a chewy bagel even though I toasted it dark. Will try again another time and will use the 'roll into ball than poke hole' method to shape them. But it all went better than I expected for first time.  ^-^

I am so glad I picked this recipe for my first attempt at using my breadmachine!  These were excellent and super easy!  I followed another commenter's advice and added minced garlic and dill.
I'm never buying bagels again!

This is the best vegan baked product I have ever tasted, let alone made myself!!  Where did you find it??  Do you have more recipes that are as delicious as this one??  Thanks so much!! ;D

These are fantastic.  I made one batch on a cold afternoon as a whim, and we haven't bought a pre-packaged bagel since then.  My husband and son love them, and that's a huge plus with me, because they don't like anything

Once a week I make a double batch of plain ones for them, and I make a single batch for myself, adding orange zest and 1/4 cup of dried cranberries.  They are amazing.

First, I would like to say that this recipe prompted my purchase of a bread machine from craigslist. hehe :) For my first time making bagels they turned out terrific! I made them with half whole wheat and half unbleached white flour. I topped them with Earth Balance, onion flakes, roasted garlic, and salt. I used a bit too much butter, but overall we both thoroughly enjoyed recipe. I will be using this again with different variations. Thank you so much! :)
