Chana Masala

What you need:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon curry
1 tablespoon tomato paste (I used ketchup)
1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas, drained, reserving 3 tablespoons liquid
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
fresh black pepper, to taste
crushed red pepper, optional, to taste
1 tablespoon margarine

What you do:

1. Heat oil on medium high heat. Fry onions until slightly browned. Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic, curry, and paste.
2. Stir and simmer about 2 minutes. Add chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Simmer 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add red pepper to taste. Add margarine, stirring through to melt it. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes more or until peas are softened and dish is hot. Serve over rice.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This recipe is great! It's really quick and easy, and very tasty. I added more of each spice, some garam masala , and coconut milk. Really good!

I love this recipe. My personal changes are: add a little ground cinnamon, and I usually use 4 or 5T tomato sauce instead of paste. I make it at least once a week, it's an extremely healthy and delicious meal! It's amazing together with lots of peas and brown rice or couscous.

This is delicious and so easy!  I went a little overboard on the red pepper, but it warmed me up after a chilly bike ride.  Thanks for sharing!!

Yum!! I made this for my family when they came up to visit, and even my carnivorous, anti-chickpea stepfather loved it. My mother insisted on getting a copy of the recipe. :)

This recipe was amazing! As I was cooking it, I was worried a little about whether or not I would like it, but it came together wonderfully in the end! This is probably one of my favorite recipes I have gotten off of this web-site! I am cooking it again tomorrow for a potluck.

I served it over couscous.
