Cheesy Sprinkle
1 cup blanched almonds
1 cup nutritional yeast
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 tso. garlic powder
Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until almonds are cut into tiny chunks (be careful not to process them into non-existent ones). Store in covered container in fridge. (I put this into an empty bacon bits container. The holes are just the right size to shake the cheesy sprinkle out.)
Here is how I use this. I toast some good vegan french bread, butter with a non-hydrogenated margarine (or use olive oil) and top with cheesy sprinkle. It is yummy!
To blanch almonds: Cover almonds with boiling water, let set about 3 minutes, pour water off. You can now slip the almond skins right off. Dry with a paper towel before proceeding with recipe.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
I love this - - it was fast and easy - - and it comes out great. I made a bunch and put it in a little 1/2 cup rubbermaid-style container and stored in the freezer to use whenever I wanted it. MMMMMMM :)
Excellent!!! ;)b
even tho i couldnt get all the almonds finely chopped in my hand held processor, it came out really great!
Great recipe! I used almond meal instead of the blanched almonds and it came out great. I love this over minestrone soup. It's so much like parmesan, it really hits the spot when I have a craving! Thanks for this one! :)
I used pecans and it came out great! I used it for a "chicken parmesan" dish.
I have one word for this recipe: YUMMY!!!
Very versatile- I used it on top of a spinach and rice casserole and also on margarined english muffins. I just need to find a suitable shaker to keep it in!
Tried another recipe in vegweb for a "cheese" sauce made with nutritional yeast. It went well so I decided to try this one. Good grief - it was AMAZING. I couldn't stop eating it. YUM YUM. Why can't I find a 6 star rating!!!!!!!!
Thank you adagio and MizzouKitten.
Unfortunately, there really isn't a substitute for the nut. yeast-- that's what makes this "cheezy." I guess if you mixed up some seasoned almond crumbs, they might make for a nice, tasty condiment/topping-- but it won't taste like cheese without the yeast. :-\
startaurus, i imagine that, insofar as flavour is concerned, nutritional yeast is the key ingredient.
First it sounds great and I want to ask what else can you substitute for the nutritional yeast? ???
