Vegan books

I am looking for book recommendations on the vegan lifestyle, not recipe books.

I'm looking for thought provoking, entertaining and enlightening books I should read.

Not that I need any more convincing or anything would just like to read some of the ethical reasoning out there.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I like John Robbins.  I have Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution.  Both were entertaining and enlightening.

I also have The China Study.  It's thought provoking, but somewhat disorganized.

I haven't read Skinny Bitch, but other people seem to like it.

Robbins is great too!  Another of my heroes!

I really liked Fast Food Nation. Also, Mad Cowboy, by Howard Lyman. Animal Liberation, by Peter Singer, gets a little weird at the end, but is a definite must read, I'd say, especially for new vegans.

I agree John Robbins is a good starter. If you are not a serious reader it will be a bit of a struggle to get through his books.

A simple book to read that has some decent ideas is
The Great American Detox Diet by Alex Jamieson

Fast Food Nation is a pretty good book. Eric Shlosser has another book that is good also
Chew on This

Morgan Spurlock's Don't eat this book I enjoyed.

Then there is VegNews this magazine is one of the best I have read.

Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating by Erik Marcus is really good.  It outlines MANY compelling arguments for veganism.  It talks about health, animals, environment, etc.

The Vegan Sourcebook, mentioned earlier, was very engaging.

I also enjoyed the candid and informative The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Living, which covered health, ethical, social and cooking themes.

skinny bitch is definitely the best. haha. i realy enjoyed reading that. and once you find out how bad eating crap if for you, they give you like a 2 weeks plan of what to eat.

i just don't understand the coffee part. they say its something you should give up along with drinking.
sorry... just can't do that.

so i like coffee... does this make me not hardcore vegan?

I don't think there is really many hardcore vegans out here.
Maybe just in diet. It is a really hard task to do if you rely on something as simple as a car.
All we can do is just try our best.

yeah, you're right. i wish some time i can go through a day without it. i don't like relying on it. but thats the only caffine i have. and i only have a cup. so, me addicted? i don't think so.

I agree Skinny Bitch was awesome. I laughed through the entire thing and yet it was still very informative. I too cannot give up my coffee! That would make me a crazy person.

when they were suggesting that people give up coffee, they were saying to do so because coffee is acidic and it helps to create an acidic environment in your body, which causes you to get sick more easily, etc....it has nothing to do with being vegan...it's just a general health thing...and FTR i LOVE coffee. i drink at least a cup a day, so i'm not slamming anyone for drinking it...i'm just explaining what they were talking about in the book.  ;)b

Vegan Freak is awesome. It helped me so much as far as communicating with non-vegans.
Also, it's an easy and fun read!

GESC,

I saw in another post you were wanting to start a raised bed garden....gardening books are fun! For starters, the simplest and easiest raised bed book, IMO, is

Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew
. Very helpful.

Also, a book regarding veganism that is not about nutrition is
Living Among Meat Eaters by Carol J. Adams .
