Oprah goes vegan

I just saw the headlines....http://tvguide.sympatico.msn.ca/TVNews/Articles/080523_oprah_goes_vegan_MH

When Oprah speaks, people listen.

When I saw the headline, I quickly posted it because I am at work & had to get back from my supper break.
So, she is only doing a 21 day detox  :-\    ....well, it's a start. Maybe she'll decide that she has never felt better & will make this a permanent life change.
Right or wrong, I still believe that a lot of people will follow her lead...just because she is Oprah. I have a feeling that the vegan community is about to get a little bigger.  ;)b

We have a thread about this under News and Debate.  :)  It's pretty exciting!

Whatever happened?

Nothing.  She was like, "Hooray, now I'm more aware of my food!"

More aware of..........the crappiness, unhealthiness, and HORRIDITY of it? Oprah.

Yeah, come on now.  She's smarter than that BS.

You know, it was along the lines of, "OK, so now we can be uber thankful and meditative about all the food we eat!  We're all set!"
Like that makes a difference to the animals or something.

I mean, she's big on helping others in need, right?  So what if we just all said, "OK, I'm reaaaally reaaaally thankful for how fortunate I am in comparison to most of the world" and called it a day?  What then, Oprah!? Come on, you are a woman of action!  Oprah, Oprah, Oprah.

I was really hoping she would stay vegan, but no go.  At least she helped others become aware and Kathy Freston got some publicity.

Yeah, I mean, all is not lost.  It certainly didn't do any harm, IMO, and it might have hit a few people.  So, yeah. *shrugs*

I think I heard she's done this before.

Yeah, I mean, this thread started in May, if that's what you mean.  Now we're just "reminiscing"  ::)

The problem is she went vegan as part of a 30 day cleasing diet type thing where she also had other restrictions, like no flour, sugar, alcohol. She wasn't really made aware of how horribly the animals are treated or how unhealthy the consumption of animal products is. Someone needs to get her to read skinny bitch or the china study or something.

I think Oprah certainly brought awareness to veganism, but I do think it caused some harm, at least a small amount in the minds of her audience. She treated veganism as a "diet" or a "cleanse" (also because she cut out sugar, alcohol, flour, etc.--as Lisa said), so when her 30 days were up, she said something about how it was a good experience, but she doesn't feel like she has a "vegan mindset" or something like that... Like she's not able to be vegan. I do think it's a positive thing that she talked/blogged about how great she felt during her cleanse, but I don't think she got a real taste of what being vegan day-to-day is like. I eat fried food sometimes! I drink alcohol! I certainly eat flour! So... I'm just a little concerned that her "followers" are under the impression that while veganism is healthy & cleansing, it's not realistic for the long-haul because it's so constricting. And as we all know, it's not.

This is true.  It's a shame she was so extreme.  Cuz there she was all "OMG I NEED MY GLASS OF WINE" and people are like, Oh, vegan sucks."  Meh.

Hi all,
Have you seen this project: http://www.livingoprah.com/? It is eye opening, funny, and somewhat mournful (at least for me). If only she could use her powers for 100% good!

That makes sense.

Still her idea was to cleanse, not save animals or promote veganism, it was to cleanse.  So to be fair to her she accomplished her goals whether or not she stayed vegan.  Many people do a yearly cleanse.  Imagine if everyone became vegan for 21 days the results on animal welfare and the environment.  That would be a great start, every little bit helps.

I'd also like to think that soem people were inspired to buy the book and become vegan.

But the message that being vegan is tough and one of the most influence women in America couldn't maintain it, even though it feels good, was harmful.

i'm watching oprah right now and shes doing a show on the 'blue zones' of the world.. the areas that have the largest clusters of people that live the longest.  the only one in the u.s. was in loma linda, ca where theres tons of seventh day adventists that follow a very close to vegan diet (no eggs, meat or dairy - idk about the honey thing).  they also have the loma linda vegan meats and the dr's had a whole table full of tofu stuff and 'beef' satay that they tried to get oprah to eat.  she annoyingly did the whole 'it's painful to put this in my mouth' reaction and then was just like 'it's ok..'  even though dr.oz was saying how great it tasted and mentioned that at his house they eat tons of tofu & seitan cus his wife is vegetarian and does the cooking, and that he feels lighter and better when he eats that way (though he did say when he is out of the house he will eat meat, but eats veg if there is a good option)

yay for dr. oz!

yay for more veganism on daytime tv.. especially when it is shown in a really great light, with healthy foods & 104 yr old ladies & 94 yr old
surgeons as great examples!

boo for oprah being whiney.  (though she did say she liked seitan & more whole bean style dishes)  she just reminded me of my mom with her face of 'im doing this to humor you and i'm going to say i dont really like it just to be stubborn and ive already made up my mind without giving it a chance'.

yay!

The other day, I had a coworker come and talk to me about how he watched Oprah with Dr. oz (I've never seen him, so I don't know anything about the show these days) about these people who lost tons of weight by cutting out meat, and eating healthier, and such, and my coworker said it made him think of me, and how he learned a lot from the show, and so forth. That was nice. I said it sounded like a great show!
