Oprah goes vegan

I just saw the headlines....http://tvguide.sympatico.msn.ca/TVNews/Articles/080523_oprah_goes_vegan_MH

When Oprah speaks, people listen.

boo for oprah being whiney.  (though she did say she liked seitan & more whole bean style dishes)  she just reminded me of my mom with her face of 'im doing this to humor you and i'm going to say i dont really like it just to be stubborn and ive already made up my mind without giving it a chance'.

That's awesome about the show and Dr. Oz! I always suspected he was cool.
Though I must say, in Oprah's defense, I would make that kind of face about those canned fake meats too--I tried one once and it was so gross. I haven't gone near the stuff in all my days as a vegan (almost 18 years now). So, maybe it was just an ewww about that canned crap, not veganism. Although I didn't actually see the show, so I don't know what I'm talking about! ;D

When the Mad Cowboy Howard Lyman came on she stopped eating beef for a short period of time.

It's all publicity and a way to get viewers.

I don't watch tv so I have no real opinions about Oprah

AC if this was mentioned in the other blog I did not have time to read through it all today.
Sorry.

I think I heard she's done this before.

i'm watching oprah right now and shes doing a show on the 'blue zones' of the world.. the areas that have the largest clusters of people that live the longest.  the only one in the u.s. was in loma linda, ca where theres tons of seventh day adventists that follow a very close to vegan diet (no eggs, meat or dairy - idk about the honey thing).

I think they misrepresented the Loma Linda SDAs.  As far as I know, they generally eat dairy and eggs, just no meat.  So think about how long they'd live vegan style!

actually, i think SDAs are encouraged to be vegan. many are vegetarian (many aren't, as well), though. i went to a neat little vegan SDA bakery in TN (can't even remember where...po-dunk no where..) but they do use honey. It's all about health for SDAs, anyway, so they also don't drink/do drugs/smoke...

Hmmm... I've been to Loma Linda Market - their all-vegetarian supermarket.  I don't remember if they have whole eggs, but they have a lot of meat substitutes that have egg whites.  And they have dairy yogurt 'n cheese 'n ice cream 'n stuff.  No meat or caffiene, tho'.

I think this is true. I get 3ABN (SDA's TV channel) over my antenna and they have cooking shows that are all vegan except for the honey. I'm not religious and if I can get past all the "Jesus this Jesus that" it's nice to watch vegan cooking programs.

That being said, I  had an SDA friend in college who was lacto-ovo. So, I agree with you that vegetarianism if not veganism is encouraged, but not required.
