What do you think about having a new weekly event - Fired-Up Fridays - where we each commit to make one contact per week regarding veg*an issues?
We could contact a company that still uses animal testing. We could ask what veg items are available on a menu, or suggest a menu item to be added. The possibilities go on and on!
Then we could report back here as to what we did and what we found out. What do you think??
Sounds good to me. I'm always up for a good cause. I'd love some help taking on the canned hunt that is around the corner and about 6 or 7 miles down the road from where I live. They have a website, and I'd love to post it (along with the owner's email). I'll be back home Friday and I can post the website then. More then just closing them down, I'd love to have the laws changed making canned hunts illegal in Georgia. I've contacted the Animal Legal Defense Fund in the past, and they gave me the numbers of some animal rights attorneys, perhaps we can make a little noise together and put them (and all like them) out of business. It would be a huge uphill battle in this hunting loving state ( plus I'm about to go on tour soon and I'm going to be moving to the Asheville area soon as well, blah blah blah....... but that's why I'll need help).
I can actually walk up to the fence (from the river side of the property) and almost feed cracked corn to the deer from my hand. That's a SPORT?!?!? Killing tame trophy deer that are used to being around humans? That get fed in the same feeding spots everday and don't run away from humans? I've cut the fence along the backside before (the place is huge, about 1000 acres), to let the deer out. The boneheads that run it drive around on fourwheelers with guns. I'm SURE they would shoot me if they caught me. They have cameras at their gates etc.
I have a crazy dream that perhaps one day, I can get people together and turn it from a place of terror and death into a Farm Sanctuary South, and turn it into a place of love and hope. Does anyone want to help?
I think that's a great idea. Would we rally behind the same cause or would we each do something on our own?
I think maybe a little of both. If we have something in mind to do invidually, we could do that. If someone has a particular plan in mind for the week and we didn't have something in mind, we could reinforce that person. That leaves us room to pick and choose what to do/support based on our personal beliefs. What do you think?

Seems yesterday's lobster victory proves that a large enough number can be heard. If a few complaints/suggestions trickle in, they won't be noticed, but if suddenly they're being overwhelmed, even if they don't care, they might stop to ask 'what's going on here?'. So, what could one do from Montana to help stop a canned hunt in Georgia?
What a wonderful idea! It could even be as "simple" as encouraging a non-veg*n acquaintance to go meatless for a day. (See, it doesn't kill you!)
Something I like to bring up when talking to the owner of a restaurant: veg*n meals are low fat, low cholesterol, usually low calorie, -and- you get cheers and attention from veg*ns everywhere.

I guess when I get back home (I have to catch a flight in a few hours), I can look into starting an on-line petition that could be forwarded to my local representative (but the bonehead probably has a life time "I'm a redneck deer murderer" pass to hunt there). I'll think about it and contact the Atlanta lawyer for Animal Legal Defense Fund and see what they think could be done to close them down, AND more importantly shutdown ALL canned hunts in the state and across the country. It's an uphill battle but something I believe passionately about.
Nothing makes me sadder then seeing a deer tied to a car/truck...or the local paper showing who killed the first buck of the season (sissy), and most upsetting of all in Georgia is being stuck behind a chicken truck. Seeing them alive and stuffed like cotton into little cages and crates. It breaks my heart :'(.

I agree that the more voices speaking out for one particular cause, the better. Victory in numbers!! I also think we could have multiple causes being supported at the same time. Maybe have a leader for each cause as a contact person? I'd be willing to help wherever I'm needed.

Yeah, hunting season in Montana . . .can't walk to the Post Office two blocks away without passing truck after truck with something dead just lying there in the back of it ( passed one this season with blood dripping from the back of the truck - parked in front of the water co. ). Yet, here, there's a thrill in the hunt -- no canned hunts that I've ever heard of ( a Montanan would just be too ashamed to have to hold the deer in to catch her ). All of my teenaged daughters' friends have their own "trophies" -- teenaged girls killing animals ! ugh. :'(

I'm on board for just about anything. Great idea, RobinMC!! I like CherBear's idea---have project 'leaders' and whoever wants to help can participate.
May I ask what a canned hunt is, before we begin? I'm a little ol' Newfoundlander, and I don't think we have those here (we don't have deer, just caribou and moose--and the moose aren't even native, they were brought here specifically for hunting). I hope this question doesn't warrant a gruesome and disturbing response... I am bracing myself!

It's where animals are kept in enclosures then hunted. :'( They're also known as "shooting preserves" or "game ranches". The animals are used to being around humans, usually being hand-fed or bottle raised so they have no fear of humans. It's really horrible :'( >:(
Indeed-- it's ghastly.
I can only offer my dad's perspective in defense (he's a hunter): he claims that all hunts are, in some respect, canned, since animal populations are managed with hunting in mind and their catchments are designed by human planners, today. But I'm not much in favor of "wild" hunting either: it would never be as viable a skill as the I-expect-postapocalyptic-chaos crowd seem to think it would, in such an event, and it only breeds waste (and sometimes cruelty), in my experience.
great idea Robin!! i'm very interested in contacting restaurants to encourage/ask for vegetarian and, especially, vegan options.
just my personal belief, but i feel that if our society were to learn/choose to consume less (and eventually no) meat then we would see a drop in the type of animal cruelty issues like the canned hunts. die-hard hunters and meat-eaters will refuse to see the fault in their belief and have every excuse out there why it is acceptable as Duckalucky has pointed out in previous posts regarding her father and family hunting and eating meat by quoting biblical, supposed environmental, and health-related justifications. if we were able to introduce the less threatening (ie: less emotionally and irrationally sparked) concept of providing more vegan (scientifically proven more healthy) dishes into our society's "normal" food chain, i believe meat consumption would drop and awareness of animals as something other than meat or food would happen, too. not overnight, of course, but i believe it could slowly come about. i actually believe it will, too. :) that is not at all to say that i wouldn't want to help contact other areas of importance like Dave's canned hunts and animal testing, etc.
but enough of my rambling! ::) just wanted to say... count me in! - tomina
count me in to. this is a fantastic idea. As someone said earlier a few letters/protests here and there are good but when if we get organised and really show numbers thats when we will be more noticed. it's worked in the past for many a good cause so lets come together and make some noise. if only john lennon was still alive....
I have never heard about canned hunting before, that's really terrible. I'll have a look to see if it happens in Australia. I know they hunt kangaroos from helicopters to cull them as they are a "pest". I'll look into that and let you know what I find out. I'm also interested in whaling, I do live in Japan after all.
Also vegan clothing and body products, shampoo, lotions etc. That's another huge industry that pays little attention to the rights of other living creatures.
And of course getting more veg/vegan food in supermarkets and restaurants would be nice.
There are so many things that we could do. I think as was mentioned that we should try to work together, if we have an idea we should post it and whoever is interested can join the fight.
I have this strange feeling that 2007 is going to be a big year for environmental issues/ animal rights and what I hope to be global awakening as to the selfish way we are destroying the world around us for our own enjoyment and convenience . well thats my dream anyway

I don't know how much time I have to devote to this cause today. But the name of the place is Foggy Bottom. It's located in Dawsonville GA. I actually went to the website and it's down. I have to look up the local attorney for Animal Legal Defense Fund and get my local rep's contact info...As I find this info throughout the next few days I will post it and we will move forward!
To those of you that have shown interest in helping...thanks so much! I actually re-plan my driving route when I goto town so I don't have to drive past the place. It's always been a thorn in my side the whole time I have lived here. Just looking at the murderers in the SUV's and pick up trucks pulling in there makes me want to rip my hair out....oops...that must be why I'm bald!

This is the info on the place. I don't think calling or emailing the owner directly will get him to change his evil ways. I think pressure needs to be put on him by various sources. Anyone have any ideas?

dave - as soon as you have any info let us know. We could start by writing letters/making phone calls, etc. As I mentioned earlier, we could have a few different causes going at once - this way everyone can choose what they want to get involved in.
Something else that I believe to be important is sending "thank you" letters to restaurants, companies, etc. that offer veg*n foods, beauty products, etc. I plan on sending a letter to Red Robin as they offer garden & Boca burgers in place of beef for any of their sandwiches. Very veg*n friendly!! :)

I wrote to Backyard Burgers today. I thanked them for carrying a vegetarian burger. Then I asked for the ingredients and explained that I was asking because I don't eat eggs or dairy. I will report back when I get an answer.
