Can someone help me identify this film?

Getting desperate here...
French film, late 1980's or early 1990s. A young woman is sent a cassette tape with street sounds, the slamming of a door in a cafe, etc. and she tries to find the place and the person who sent her the tape by identifying the sounds. The actress was of the Juliet Binoche/Sophie Marceau type. I only saw the film once so I can't remember all of the plot but it has haunted me ever since I saw it. Can anyone help?
I posted this question on Yahoo! Answers and the only response I got was from some idiots who told me it was Amelie. Nonsense.
Don't laugh at me if I'm wayyyy off track (lol!).. My guess is Double Life of Véronique. Yay? Nay?
Sounds interesting (I IMDB'd it) but no mention of the casette tape or the mysterious "treasure hunt" of sounds.

eta: Gorgeous soundtrack, btw.
SCORE!!! I think that's it!!! The stuff I saw on IMDB didn't mention that...you rawk, dood.
Now to find out if I can get it on DVD....

:) I hope it's the correct movie.
Here's a site with links to copies of the DVD in different regions. Spain is region 2, right?

Kieslowski....of course!! The man who gave us Bleu! which is one of my faaaavorite movies of all time. A lot of French movies defy description, by which I mean they make no sense when you just describe the plot but when you watch them they suck you into their world and it's great...but K. K. is really, seriously out there in a good way. One of the things I love about his movies is that you really have to actively watch them, as in pay attention to what you see. And that the silence sometimes says so much more than the dialogue.
Imonna try to order it locally but if I have to use your links I will.
It is not my wish to be fulsome, my dear boy, but I adore you. :)>>>

You should look it up. I've not seen Cache. I just found a copy of Double Life of Veronique at the library a few blocks down from my apartment. I'm going to re-watch it.

I watched this last night, I really liked it!
It's great to share films you love. If you liked Veronique, try the Three Colours trilogy. I love Blue.
Still waiting for my copy to come in...DH ordered Kamizake at the same time, and got it last weekend. :-\

I like it! Hit 'em with spitballs until they put the movie in your hands. Tell 'em Josh sent ya. ;)
I went in and there was my friend, but no movie yet. I threatened to order it from Amazon and she said, "Oh no, don't do that!" I don't want to...the postage would put me away. She doesn't quite understand why it hasn't come in. I told her I'd continue to drop in and hassle her about it till it comes, which she seemed to think was a good thing...
