30 Days: Animal Rights

Many of you have probably seen the documentary titled "Supersize Me". Well, the same man who created that film, Morgan Spurlock, later made a show where a person will experience an alternate lifestyle for one month. I found this on Hulu and came across an episode called "Animal Rights" where an avid hunter lives with a vegan family that work for PETA. This episode was very good- I even cried. Take a look.

i saw this episode a while ago, it was really good. i wonder if the guy ever turned vegan after the show or just kept on hunting...hmmmm

He said at the end that he'd still continue to hunt. Sad.

People can rationalize some f'd up stuff, even in the face of huge amounts of information saying it's a bad idea... I guess the key is to decide ahead of time what conclusions you want to reach (you know, whichever ones tickle your fancy), & then ignore everthing that doesn't support them. Humans do this all the freakin' time, & it's hard for me to understand...

Yeah, it confuses me too. What I don't get is why did the guy sign up for it when he was so against it?

my boy's response to why he will always eat meat is because he was in an agriculture program (and his gpa is a farmer) and he knows animals r treated like a product and is okay with that... i don't understand this disconnect in people... they r just so insanely stubborn they don't want to see it as wrong

If he's anything like the hunters I know, he thought he could "set 'em straight." After all, he's right because it's him!

I can never see hulu stuff...i'll have to see if I can find it on You Tube. Tough on folks who don't live in the US.

sounds like the man is overcompensating for something he lacks within himself.  poor man, i feel sorry for him, and even sorrier for the animals that have to suffer until he finds that lacking element within himself...

I am glad someone posted this video!

I saw it about 6 months ago and it really sparked my interest in researching agribusiness. I understand how it can be frustrating to watch people avoid making the move to veganism when they have witnessed the suffering involved in factory farming, but I think that there is hope. People move slowly; in only 30 days he was obviously impacted by what he experienced and witnessed. My road to veganism was definitely not cut and dry, so I think that every little drop in the bucket helps. At the very least, his participation in the show affected a lot of viewers and probably planted some little vegan seeds in their minds  :)

Thanks for posting this! This is the first time I have seen it. I really liked that they mixed the factual information from the doctor and the animal shelter along with the more emotional and moral appeals. It kind of pisses me off though, that anyone could actually be ok with this kind of suffering and slaughter. I especially hate the factory farmers who endorse and support it and do hope that they suffer and die from an extremely bruatal heart attack or other painful disease. As for the rest of the meat eating population they are either too stupid/lazy to check the facts as to where their food actually comes from or they flat out don`t care and I don`t know which of the two is more upseting. Oh, well... the only thing I can do is maintain my vegan lifestyle and inform as many people as I can. I definitely have no pity for all the fat a$$holes who stuffed their face with enormous amounts of meat and crap all their life and are dying/sick because of it... maybe we should have curb side pick up for their bloated sorry asses.

There's an interview-type article at http://www.usnews.com/blogs/erbe/2010/01/06/understanding-why-america-loves-animals-but-eats-them.html about the psychological disconnect necessary in order for people to feel okay about eating some animals, but not others... it's with author/ psychologist Melanie Joy, who wrote a book about the subject... & I think it's pretty interesting. Maybe this goes to what's happening in the gray matter of the 'animals as products' farmers/ eaters/ hunters... I think Foer's 'Eating Animals' also touches on this subject: humans can't think of it as an animal, like a dog or cat or gerbil, & eat it -- so they invent 'blinders' to what's actually being eaten. People eat 'beef' or 'pork' instead of 'cow' or 'pig', and pretend to themselves it's a product; not an animal. 'Cause if they thought cows & pigs in the same way they think of dogs & cats, they wouldn't be able to eat it. 'Cause, you know, that would be wrong...

Humans are f'n crazy... has anyone else noticed that?!

its almost like-- in my opionion-- the blinders set forth by people, in order for them to comply/ remain complacent with acts such as the Holocaust, genocide (wherever), oppression & human suffering, and flat out the justification of overconsumptive patterns of behavior.
