new vegan finds!

i'd like to start a thread of new things you happen across or discover that are vegan.  i browse around in the grocery store quite a bit, reading labels, and sometimes find some pretty interesting and surprising vegan foods!

so anyway, one i found this weekend is....banana babies!  they're from diana's bananas and the dark chocolate ones are vegan.  they're just frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, but..mmmm.  the chocolate is a tiny bit waxy, but all in all, i thought it was a pretty good find.

also, many of marie calendar's fruit pies are vegan as well, which is awesome for a yummy, fatty dessert when i don't feel like making one, haha...

anyone else been finding something cool and yummy?

pudding?!  :o  i must find some vegan pudding (that's not the crazily expensive kind that they sell at the hfs).

yeah....I tried some of those pudding cups from WF.  Zen soy?  Or something like that.  I tried the vanilla, the taste was good but the grayish color was a little off putting.

I don't know if anyone wrote this vet, but some pop tarts are vegan.  Look for ones that don't have frosting.

i believe blueberry ones WITH frosting are vegan. bf is addicted to poptarts, so he would know better than me.

they also have whole wheat poptarts now that are bangin.

Yeah, I've bought Jello instant chocolate pudding and Royal instant chocolate pudding.  I just did a search to make sure they're really vegan and they're listed on the peta site, so I will take their word for it. http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/VeganShoppingQS-Baking.asp?Category=Baking

Okayyyyy.... so would you make it with soy milk instead of normal milk?  Has anyone tried this?

Yes, use soymilk, but less than they say. see my previous post for extra yum:

Another thing that I recently noticed is vegan is a lot of pudding mixes.  Totally bad for you, but quick and delish.  It says to add 2 cups of milk, but with soymilk it works better to use less than that.  I was craving a frozen sweet treat, so I put some of the pudding in the freezer and it turned into a delicious fudgcicle-like consistency.  Yummmm. I'll be doing that again :)

The brown sugar ones, think they're cinnamon brown sugar, are vegan. They're also addictive.

The cinnamon roll poptarts are vegan.  On a side note...I had to tour the factory for work once...it was cool watching how they're made.

I think I already mentioned it in this thread, but the past two 7-Eleven's I've visited had a refrigerated section of vegan sandwiches and other lunch items.  I bought a quinoa and grilled vegetable burrito today for the long bus ride from Philly to Hartford.  It was pretty dang good!  And I was like, whoa, quinoa at a convenience store!

What could be in salt and vinegar chips that would make them non-vegan?

some have whey.  sometimes non-vegan lactic acid.  it's really depressing.

Kettle chips cracked pepper/salt and vinegar/salt.....are both REALLY good.

What about Stacy's Pita Chips?  I think some of those are vegan.... They're really tasty.

The Kellogg's website says those have gelatin!  Hopefully your packaging is different.  :)

maybe mirrya meant the brown sugar cinnamon ones that are unfrosted.  the gelatin is in the poptart frosting so they should be ok.

Ugh! You're right. I grabbed my box of Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts after reading this post. They do have gelatin. Easy to miss in that dense text of ingredients on the side of the box. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Next time I'll look out for the ones that are not frosted.

pop tarts always annoyed me because I would eat like two or three of them at a time when I was younger, and then when I learned that each pastry has like 250 calories I was like  :o
So that's no fun. But maybe the unfrosted ones aren't so bad?  >:D

It's good to know the  gelatin is in the forsting....but...weird as well. I thought gelatin made things.....jiggly *cringes*

I was starving twice last week, bot of which I opted for vending machine poptarts because that was the healthiest option.  First one hade marshmallowish stuff in it, so I really shoulda known better.  Second one was strawberry though.....and it had gelatin too. I was angry. Gelatin freaks me out.

i was thinking about this while i was at target yesterday and stopped to check out the poptarts, looking for gelatin.  there were so many stupid ingredients on the side of the box though, that i just put them back down.  i'm not sure i should be eating a pastry that has that many ingredients.  it just seems...  wrong.

also, check out the target brand grocery products (including archer farms organic).  there's a lot of stuff that's vegan (not all of it, but still) and it's cheaper and all really yummy!  i got the archer farms blueberry almond oatmeal and was totally psyched to see that it did not have milk in it!  yay!

I hope I didn't misread the cinnamon roll box.  Yuck!!!  I'll have to have my sister check it out.....but I would swear that the cinnamon roll ones didn't have gelatin.
